When Eating Becomes a Pastime
When
eating to live becomes living to eat. Tips to recognize
& break the weight gain cycle.
We all like
to eat. If we didn't, the human race wouldn't survive
for long. But among those of us who like to eat are
those of us who love to eat. In turn, eating becomes
a pastime for these individuals - much like a hobby
of sorts. Rather than knitting or drawing as a pastime,
the pastime individual eats.
Pastime
eaters may eat because they enjoy eating as well as
the taste of the food. Pastime eaters may eat a scheduled
meal then shortly thereafter begin snacking. The snacking
may not end until the next scheduled meal arrives.
Pastime
eaters may OR may not be picky about the foods they
consume. And pastime eaters are almost always aware
that they have a problem in controlling how much food
they consume. Most feel powerless to change their situation
and as time moves forward, so do the weight scales.
As the weight
mounts, health issues may arrive and along with them,
a new level of stress. In turn the stress factor is
generally dealt with by the pastime eater seeking comfort
in food.
As with
all habits, they are hard to kick. I remember as a small
girl, a popular pamphlet that circled in our church.
The pamphlet showed a picture of a young mother breastfeeding
her infant and as a pre-teen, the image caught my attention.
In the good old days, modesty was the rage; exposed
skin was taboo. Of course, the invention of the bikini
choked modesty to death. Nonetheless, there was a picture
of a baby breastfeeding, then a picture of a young boy
smoking. Next, the young boy was portrayed as a young
man drinking from a bottle of hooch. The final picture
was that of the grown man holding a Bible with the words,
"Finally weaned," written beneath.
The pamphlet
incident parallels with the pastime eater. From the
time we are born we are either silenced with a bottle
or pacifier OR ordered by our parents to eat everything
on our plates. As we mature, celebrations and milestones
in our lives are centered around food. It's anywhere
and everywhere these days - from roadside billboards
to television commercials. The sight and the scent of
food can wake up the most well-behaved dieter's
desire to eat. Oh, they may not eat - but they may still
want to do such.
For those
who are pastime eaters, their 'Do Not Eat Now' button
is broken. No matter how hard they try, they just can't
stop the eating frenzy.
If you OR
if someone that you know is a pastime eater OR has the
potential to become a pastime eater, it is essential
that the cycle be stopped. Without self-intervention
AND/OR outside intervention, the risks associated with
obesity can physically and mentally cripple the individual.
The following may be of help in breaking the pastime
eating cycle:
Completely cut out snacking from your daily diet*;
Keep the mouth occupied with chewing gum;
Opt for interactive entertainment rather than depending
upon the source to totally entertain;
Get up and move - do an activity that you enjoy;
Brush your teeth if you feel the need to eat &
it isn't time for a scheduled meal;
Keep foods out of your work area*;
Keeping your mind busy will help keep thoughts of
eating at bay;
Opt for water over sugary beverages;
Keep your focus and realize that big changes take
time.
-
- *If
you are employed in a high-energy job, your body
may require energy (food) replenishing. Opt for
high protein snacks such as jerky.
If you
still experience difficulty with pastime eating,
please enlist the help of a qualified professional
to help you break the cycle. Through dedication,
patience and hard work, pastime eating can certainly
be conquered. YOU are definitely worth all
the work necessary in achieving such!
