Melatonin - What is Melatonin?

Definition of Melatonin & the Side Effects of Melatonin Deficiency

Defining Melatonin

A tiny gland in the brain known as the pineal produces the hormone melatonin. Melatonin is secreted in the dark moments of the day, triggered by our natural Wake/Sleep Cycle.

As melatonin enters the bloodstream, the body beckons sleep. High levels of melatonin remain in the blood throughout the night, then disappear with the rising sun.

Health studies indicate that when an individual doesn't get sufficient sleep they are more apt to gain weight than those who get adequate sleep.

If you're having difficulty sleeping try cutting out all forms of the following foods and drinks:

- Those containing caffeine such as coffee and tea.

- Alcoholic beverages which may interrupt your sleep due to the effects on the bladder and the need to empty the bladder.

- Gassy foods which can cause digestive upset and interfere with sleep.

- Acidic foods which also create digestive upset.

- Try to exercise long before it's time for bed. Exercising or performing activities before bedtime can create tears in your sleeping pattern.

What are the side effects for Melatonin deficiency?

When an insufficient amount of Melatonin is produced, the body is suddenly at risk due to a lack of sleep. Fatigue settles in due to unrest; accidents are more likely; performance both on the job and at school may be influenced.
