Tess is overweight & is in love with Bob. But will Bob choose model-thin Elena?
Tess had struggled with her weight from infancy. She was a pudgy baby, a tubby toddler and her teen years were not being very kind to her. Furthermore, at thirteen she had taken an interest in boys. Funny how only two years ago she couldn't stand to be around them; they were obnoxious. Now she couldn't see enough of them!
There was one guy in particular, Bob, who had caught her fancy. Bob was fourteen and very mature for his age. And it certainly didn't hurt anything that he was drop-dead cute!
Although Bob had shown an interest in Tess, such as flying the kite with her that summer day in the park, Tess knew in her heart of hearts that he could never be seriously interested in her as a potential girlfriend because of her weight. Bob was athletically built; Elena was more along his lines of a girlfriend. She was on the cheerleading squad and had made it clearly known to Bob that she found him attractive.
Tess gazed up from her thoughts, a bit shocked to discover Bob and Elena approaching her. She heard Elena tell him, "You're an idiot, Bob! And how dare you pick her over me! She's below me! You'll be sorry!"
At that, Elena stormed off into the distance, her anger blowing everyone in her path to the side. Tess felt almost embarrassed for her. However, there wasn't time to concentrate on the irate Elena, for Bob was approaching her now. Her eyes widened as she saw his ID bracelet glisten under the rays of the warming sun.
"This wasn't how I intended things to be, Tess," he began, his voice calm, his blue eyes connected with her green ones. "Elena..."
He paused as if he wasn't sure what he should say next.
Tess commented, "She's quite angry with you." She glanced at the bracelet and tacked on, "I guess um....she broke up with you? I-I hadn't known that the two of you were going together."
That hurt, and Tess wanted to run off as Elena had so she could cry.
Bob shook his head. "Nope, not at all. In fact, well....she's angry with me, Tess, because she extracted my bracelet and announced to me that we were going to be....well, I suppose that she was claiming me as her boyfriend."
Tess widened her eyes in realization. "I see," she eased out thoughtfully. "And, I'm thinking that you said no."
"Yeah, I said no," Bob echoed, his face etched with a smile now.
Tess swallowed the lump in her throat. What she wouldn't give to be his girlfriend if only for a day.
She batted her eyes in wonder as Bob handed his bracelet to her and said, "Look, you're the only girl for me, Tess. I guess I'm glad that Elena cornered me, or I'd probably still be hiding behind my shyness. Well, will you be my girl, Tess?"
Tess still felt like crying, only now with tears of joy! In her confusion, she managed to stutter, "I-I...why me? I mean, Elena is so...so...thin. So perfect - "
"Ssshhh," Bob told her, touching his finger to her lips and immediately silencing her. "It's you that I want, Tess. To me, you're the perfect one."
"Oh yes, Bob!"
Bob brushed her trembling lips with a light kiss, their first, but certainly not their last.....
