Mesothelioma - What is Mesothelioma? The risk factors for Mesothelioma & symptoms of Mesothelioma. What is mesothelioma & why the sudden concern & interest?Mesothelioma is a rare cancer that attacks the mesothelium - a protective sac that covers most of our internal organs. Mesothelioma occurs when cancerous (malignant) cells invade the mesothelium. Mesothelioma is a very rare form of cancer, so early detection is essential to preserve life. If Mesothelioma remains undetected, cancer cells spread to other organs of the body making a cure more difficult to achieve - so the earlier Mesothelioma is detected, the better one's odds. According to the American Cancer Society, Mesothelioma - though extremely rare, there are about 2,000 new cases reported annually with an increase noted in the rate of diagnosed cases. The rise in cases stems from individuals who worked with asbestos materials several decades ago, and in whom the onset and symptoms of the disease are just surfacing. Who is at risk for developing Mesothelioma? The common denominator is asbestos exposure. About 75% of the reported cases indicate asbestos exposure, with some cases never having exposure to asbestos. If a person has been exposed to asbestos and also has one or more other factors that may increase cancer risks, that person's risks are greatly increased for developing Mesothelioma. Risks are increased with age, and appear to be higher for men. What is asbestos and how does it contribute to Mesothelioma?Asbestos is mined. It consists of tiny flexible fibers. Asbestos has been used in everything from cement to roofing materials. When asbestos is stirred about, the fibers take to the air and may be unknowingly inhaled or ingested which may lead to any of the following: lung cancer, larynx cancer, kidney cancer, lung ailments, and of course Mesothelioma. OSHA now regulates the acceptable amount of asbestos that an individual can be exposed to without risk; if levels exceed acceptable amounts, protective gear must be provided to employees. What are the symptoms of Mesothelioma?
