weight loss recommendation similar to this? "Lose 16 pounds a year by switching
from potato chips to pretzels." OR, "Lose 8 pounds a year by switching from
regular yogurt to skimmed yogurt?"
Keep in mind that those suggestions are effective for weight loss ONLY if the dieter eats those foods on a regular basis - and for many of these types of recommendations, it requires incorporating the foods in the daily diet.
A good example where
food switching might be effective is when the dieter switches from whole milk to
skimmed milk or from sugar to a sugar substitute because these foods are
generally consumed on a daily basis (milk, sugar).
Another eye-catcher for dieters are food stats that lay out big calorie numbers, such as, "Save a billion calories a year by eating hot air popcorn rather than buttered popcorn when eaten at least three times per week." Have you ever known anyone in your life who has accomplished a substantial amount of weight loss due to this technique? These 'food switching/food substitution' examples are fantastic ways of demonstrating to dieters just how many calories can be saved by enjoying healthier versions of their favorite foods. As far as being an effective mode for weight loss, they're generally not - unless an individual consumes the same diet day in and day out. |
