Even though Jan was padded with 30 extra pounds (give or take a few pounds) she was still in denial. It was at this point that she attended her High School reunion.

Jan instantly relaxed, glad that she'd purchased that $50 springform girdle. It was worth every penny. It had certainly worked in impressing Sybil. Then Jan went on to admire Sybil's size two, white beaded evening gown as she lifted a wafer full of guacamole dip to her perfect lips.

 

Jan thought, "The woman eats like a pig going to market yet I touch one olive and blow up like stovetop popcorn. It's so unfair." With effort, her hands were able to remain by her side as she searched the table for unstuffed celery and discarded parsley.

 

Rather than inspiring Jan, the party fueled her into a state of depression. She made a personal vow to trot to Supermart first thing come morning and buy that new scale. Thirty pounds was nothing. "A cinch to lose," she thought.

 

Upon returning home and weighing on the new scale she discovered that - yes indeed, the old scale was definitely off. Unfortunately, by 10 pounds and not in her favor. Jan was so upset that only the bag of extra-butter popcorn was able to calm her down. It took her a good ten minutes to locate her can of diet soda during the cool-down.
