Dieting: How Much Water Do You Need to Drink Each Day?

Take a hard look at this question which will reveal a lot about your dietary needs:

How much water do you drink daily? Exclude all other fluids consumed throughout your day - tea, coffee, sodas, juices, milk, alcohol - all liquids except plain, clear, water.

If you are like a lot of people, your answer is 'that you drink zero glasses of water per day'. Most people simply prefer to have their beverage dressed up. The trouble with 'dressed-up' beverages is that they tend to be rich in caloric content.

Take an innocent cup of regular coffee, plain with no additives. Now let's dress our drink up with a good dose of flavored creamer and 3 spoons of granulated sugar. Our zero calorie coffee suddenly went to about 150 calories.

Sweet tea is another tricky drink as sugar contains 16 calories per teaspoon, and about 800 calories per cup. Those sweet calories can add up quickly, particularly if more than one serving is enjoyed. While 16 calories is small, when spoon after spoon is added the end result we create become Caloriezilla.

How much water do I incorporate into my diet each day?

Most individuals require 8 - 10 glasses (8 ounce cups) of water per day to ensure a healthy body. Because many individuals tend to think in 'glass' rather than in 'cup' content, it's important to know how much liquid your beverage containers contain. Think about those old movies; the coffee cups were so tiny back then - actually, they appeared to hold about 1 cup. I remember when I was a kid and when my dad would work really hard he'd stop by the convenience store and purchase the giant soda in a bottle. Back then, sizes were much smaller than they are now. Sizes of drinks appeared to have exploded in the 1970's and early 1980's. Few people would consider thinking about drinking a 16 ounce soda in the 1960's. Today it's nothing for many individuals to consume a 2-liter bottle of regular soda. And we wonder why obesity rates have increased as well as dental issues. There's nothing like a soda to eat away at tooth enamel.

As to water - it has finally come to its full potential in the marketplace. Water has become a huge craze in the Diet Arena, accelerated by big-boy Water Manufacturers and those businesses that make the 'purification attachments' for your kitchen. The slogan generally goes something like, "Drink as much water each day as you possibly can to ensure optimum health'.  This could indeed be fatal.

Studies indicate that the death of many long-distant runners was associated with an imbalance of the electrolytes in the body.

And the manufacturers are adding all sorts of chemicals and flavors to our water.

Here are just a few really swell things about water that might encourage you to 'drink up'!

- water is very filling and can sometimes wipe out hunger pains

- water to the kidneys is like a soothing crème to dry, cracked skin

- water enhances the look of your skin and nails, and may aid those experiencing facial breakouts

- water helps flush out toxins in the body, as well as sodium which can trigger water-weight gain

- water keeps constipation at away

- ample water in the diet will make you feel better

- water contains zero calories

- keep in mind that your total fluid intake for the day includes the other forms of liquid consumed as well as the water contained in the foods consumed

Bottom line: be sure to enjoy your 8 cups of water per day, but don't drown yourself in the process.

Diet Tip on Water: Try adding a slice of lemon, lime or orange to the side of your glass. It's beauty will compliment you - you handsome dieter you!
