Dieting Tips for Vegetables When Dining Out

Weight Loss Tips & Advice for Vegetables, Wipe Boring Off the Map When it Comes to Vegetables!

When dining out you have little control over what goes into your food or recipe. However, you can exercise a bit of control by viewing the menu before ordering. Request a nutrition fact guide for the restaurant when available.

As to vegetables on your plate, try ordering them steamed when applicable. From there you can decide what you want to add to them when the waiter brings you your plate. Here are a few more tips that can assist when dining out or when preparing your vegetables at home.

Vegetable Tips for Dining Out

- Take along your 'no calorie butter spray' to the restaurant with you, if possible. If not, be certain to limit the butter or margarine although butter is typically served in restaurants over margarine. It contains more fat and fat equals flavor.

- Skip the sour cream which is very high in fat content.

- If you order corn-on-the-cob, stand your cob up on one end and use your knife to slice off the kernels. This will save you from picking your teeth at the end of the meal as well as save a few starchy calories.

- Avoid vegetables that are drowning in sauces, especially creamy sauces and cheese sauces on the restaurant menu.

Vegetable Tips for Home Recipes

Vegetables that aren't dressed up make the healthiest choices for your diet. Examples include a plain baked potato, plain green beans and plain slivered carrots.

To make the vegetables more interesting you can add some healthy ingredients, including sauces or spices that will...er...spice things up! Try the following:

- green beans prepared with a few slivered almonds

- spinach and dried cranberries served with a fruit-based salad dressing

- carrots glazed with honey and a few dashes of ground cinnamon

-  beets that are pickled on the stove top with a mix of beet juice, distilled white vinegar and granulated sugar; if you like Splenda you can use it instead of the sugar to save calories.

- chick peas roasted in a pan on the stove top using a pat or a serving of light margarine

- English peas paired with sweet baby onions

- zucchini squash goes lovely with canned diced tomatoes as does okra
