DIET TIPS FOR SALADS - IS YOUR SALAD DRESSED TO KILL?

Is your salad a Diet Delight or is it a green giant nightmare?

It's human nature to take something plain and pure and goof it up. Such is the case with 'perfect' salad fixings from Mother Nature herself! Lettuce, tomatoes, mushrooms, carrots, bell peppers, onions, broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, squash - just to name a few, generally get smothered in oils and Mayo based salad dressings and become 'Dressed to Kill' rather than 'Dressed to Diet Thrill'.

DIET TIPS FOR SALADS

Salads can be a 'toss up' leading to weight loss or weight gain, depending on what is tossed into the salad.  These savvy diet tips can 'lettuce' win the Diet Race and help 'squash' weight gain.

1. Order light, lowfat, free, or fat-free dressings for your salads. Choose light, low fat dressings. Those with a vinegar base generally contain less calories. The catch is that are also generally higher in sodium.

2. Watch the cheese because it's extremely high in calories for what it is. A small one-ounce slice of cheese contains about 100 calories.

3. Croutons can also be pricey in the Calorie Arena.

4. Bacon bits go a long way, but tend to be extremely high in sodium. If bacon bits are kept at a minimum, they are fine but again, there's that sodium factor leaping out at you!

5. Request your dressing on the side because you may not use all of it.

6. If your salad contains eggs, discard the egg yolks to save about 60 calories. Egg whites are extremely low in calories - less than 20 for extra large eggs.

7. Crackers contain about 15 calories each, and really add up. Count them out before you begin so that you don't lose count and consume more than you intend.

8. Be sure to wash your vegetables well to remove commercial insecticides and harmful salmonella.

9. Serve salad dressings on the side. Why? Because you may use less than intended.

10. If you enjoy Mayo on your salad, opt for LIGHT Miracle Whip or fat free Mayo. One Tablespoon contains about 30 calories and adds a tangy burst of flavor to your salad. Rather than serve this ultra low calorie diet salad dressing on the side, simply mix the Mayo in your salad and enjoy.
