GOING TO
THE MOVIES QUIZ
What are your best snack choices
at the movies? And how many calories are packed in that hot buttered movie
popcorn?
OH
- THOSE THROBBING ANSWERS...
1. Krispy Kreme Donuts (glazed ring) contain 200
calories per donut. However, many supermarket donuts contain about 160
calories. So actually, a person can eat about 8 Krispy Kreme Donuts to
equal that large bucket of popped movie popcorn, or 10 market donuts. If
you ask for additional butter, bump the calorie content WAY UP as every little
LEVEL TABLESPOON will cost you about an additional 120 calories. Oh the
guess work!
2. 1,650 WITHOUT additional 'butter'. If you
add 6 Tablespoons of butter to the giant tub, you're now up to 1 dozen Krispy
Kremes. Frankly, I'd rather have the Krispy Kremes.
3. If you decide to return for refills, that
innocent-looking soda is going to cost you almost a day's work of calories,
especially if you are on a 1,200 - 1,500 calorie diet per day. In addition,
other than milk, most beverages contain empty calories.
4. Ounce-per-ounce, Dots and Milk Duds pack about
the same amount of calories - with Dots weighing in at about 95 calories per
ounce, and Milk Duds at about 118 per ounce. However, Dots would be the
'smarter' snack due to fat content.
5. Hard to believe that a small box of candy
contains 900 calories but there are actually higher calorie snacks out there.
Milk Duds do take a while to eat due to the caramel pull. So if
you must enjoy, then do - just enjoy a few and not the whole box. No -
not half the box, either!
6. No fat - yet they contain about the same about
of calories as Dots and Duds.
7. Though that 'monster pickle' contains about 1,200
mg of salt, pickles
- when used in moderation, can help you lose weight! By the way, the daily
recommended salt intake is about 1 teaspoon - 2,400 mg.
8. Even when the body is at rest it needs calories/energy
to function. This is one reason why many 'exercise charts' are deceiving.
The number of calories burned at the 'at rest' rate is tossed in with
the amount of calories that the total exercise burns.
So again, if you lose control at the movies, chin
up! Let's say that you eat as 'normal' throughout the day that you go
to the movies. And let's say you indulge in a large container of popcorn,
1 large drink and 1 box of Milk Duds. You can expect to gain one pound.
Yes, it's going to take you about 1 week to pull that off if you cut 500
calories per day from your 'normal' daily diet. (If you're dieting, don't
ever go below 1,200 or I'll come and haunt you!)
So it's at this point where we have to make some
decisions. Is two hours worth of merriment worth a week's worth of sacrificing?
On a full tummy, one might answer, "NO WAY!!"
On an empty tummy, one would answer, "GIVE
ME THE POPCORN NOW!"
"AND DON'T FORGET TO ADD LOTS OF EXTRA BUTTER!!!!"
Perhaps our best defense is to:
a. Go to the movies on a full stomach.
b. Opt for a movie rental, pop some low
fat, smart-type
popcorn, pour on the heated 'no calorie, refrigerated butter spray'.
That's a wrap, guys!
"Rolling, rolling, rolling - keep that popcorn
moving, though the seats are loaded...."
