First of all, I do not like the words 'obese' or 'obesity'. They have the ring of 'beast in the city'. With that out of the way, let's address the 'obesity statistics'. Studies show us that if we are overweight, we are putting ourselves at greater risk for many health ills along life's pathway. I had a great grandmother who was extremely overweight and lived into her 80's. In fact, she was an active little puss and was baking on the day she died. If she hadn't fallen off the chair she had climbed to reach another sack of flour, she may have lived a few years longer. When it's all said and done, I'm really not so certain about this weight/death relation. The health world tends to blow things to the extreme - things such as exercise for example. Exercise is fantastic for strengthening our heart, our lungs, our muscles and so forth, but it's not that great of a tool for weight loss. You can walk until your tongue hangs out for an entire hour and wipe out all the calories you burned off by consuming a chocolate eclair in about 2 minutes. True, exercise when mingled with a reduction in food is helpful in losing more weight - but it's certainly not as powerful as the stationary bike manufacturers would like you to believe when related to losing weight. In fact, an overweight person who is physically fit is in much better condition, health-wise, than a thin nutrient-deprived individual. Additional weight on our bodies can indeed contribute to certain diseases and health woes. But to publish all the statistics regarding those diseases just serves to scare people into losing weight. Losing weight should be done on the basis of a desire to lose weight. Positive results rarely stem from fear. |
