Diet, Christmas & the Weight Gain Connection

The Island of Misfit Foods

Here we all are - piled high on Santa's wonderful, magical sleigh - sailing through the air, wildly smiling as our eyes dance to view the breast of the new fallen snow below.

"Tra, la, la, la la, Tra, la, la, la la," we all sing.

But wait! What is this? Santa, you idiot! What's this balloon doing in my hand - and why are we being dropped out of the sleigh one by one?  Oh no - what's that large island below?  Could it be...  Gasp!!!  It's The Island of Misfit Foods!

Just my luck - on the way down, my balloon popped.

Never mind - just look over there!  Wow, it's a 10-story chocolate torte filled with a river of real whipping cream!  Yum!  Look over there!  It's a Nutcracker filled with nuts!  Oh, and look over there standing by the Nutcracker!  It's a fairy filled with sugar plums!

So many delightful goodies - it's almost impossible to resist anything in sight.

And here we are, stranded on the Island of Misfit Foods with no rescue in sight until after Christmas.

What's a dieter to do?

How can we manage to drag ourselves through the holiday hall of food without looking as if we've swallowed Santa's pack? In fact, without looking like Santa-himself after the holidays have ended?

This is indeed a diet dilemma, isn't it? Those wonderful scents - cinnamon mixed with pine boughs. The wonderful sights - cheesecake covered in dark chocolate with whole fresh strawberries growing on top. Inverted.

What to do, what to do? Is this the end of Diet Sanity?

Don't despair just yet! We can still have lots of 'tra la la la la's' and still have holiday joy.

It's all about Smart Diet Planning - you genius you!  Yes, you know what to do, so grab your 'Diet Motivation Wits' about you and let's see what sort of healthy dieting thoughts we can pull out of Santa's pack:

Choose Foods Wisely

Keep in mind that it only takes an instant to glut-away a slice of pecan pie that contains 750 calories. If Aunt Martha made the pie, it's scads more. The woman always goes nuts with the corn syrup.

Although it's probably my absolute favorite dessert in all the universe, it's about the deadliest, calorie-wise.  Well...outside of carrot cake prepared with real cream cheese frosting and packed with English walnuts or non-rancid pecans.

Nonetheless, try to remember that it takes VERY LITTLE time to eat.  Piece of pie, a few yum-yums, and it's all gone-gone. Straight through the lips and onto the hips.

Be Aware of the Amount of Food You Are Eating & Drinking

When you're gathered with friends and family, try to be aware of everything that you are putting inside your tummy. Those little items add up quickly, especially those pecan tassies. Believe me, I know!

While we may overlook the mincemeat pie and settle for angel food cake, it doesn't mean that we can hack off globs of the cake until it transforms into devil's food. Just a slice will do - and oh, toss on some of those fresh, sliced strawberries, will ya? Now we're talking!

All good things must surely end.

Holidays come, and holidays go. You certainly don't want to be left with 5-20 pounds of unwanted weight when the lights come down.
