Kitty's New Year's Resolution

Scenario #2
It's the holiday season! Kitty is happy and really enjoying being with friends and family. Then it happens. Kitty's smile shatters as Aunt Scrooge nears the cider-filled punchbowl where she's standing. Aunt Scrooge's got the eyes of a hawk and the tongue of a snake. Kitty can feel it, the attack that's certain to come.
"Dear, you've put on MORE weight since I last saw you, haven't you?"
Just what Kitty needed; Aunt Scrooge's annual flogging. She gives her aunt a discerning look then attempts to change the subject, thinking that if she inflates Aunt Scrooge's ego then she may be gracious enough to drop the weight issue. However, it would have been more satisfying to ram Aunt Scrooge's head in the sour cider.
"My, but you're looking well, Aunt Scrooge. Oh, by the way your Jell-O concoction is divine. Perhaps you'll be so kind as to share the family recipe with me?"
Aunt Scrooge's mouth drops open five inches as she tries to recover from Kitty's dose of kindness. She felt a bit bad, too, because she'd pointed out Kitty's weight. As for the Christmas Tree Papaya Mold she'd created, no one else had offered a compliment. She'd seen Ralph stick his finger inside of the shaking green glob to pull out a piece of papaya, but other than that, nothing.
She graced Kitty with a smile, hoping there was time to amend her earlier insult. In a low, almost confident tone she told her, "Darling, you know you're my favorite niece?" Then, "Actually, it's a low-cal version that I rarely share. However, I'll make an exception for you."
As you can see, Kitty used a bit of psychology in dealing with her difficult aunt. A compliment goes a long way. Also, her compliment came out of the blue, totally unexpected by her aunt. Let's look at Scenario #3.
