Diet, Weight Loss Tips, Weight Loss Support, Weight Loss & Dieting Advice HIGH GLYCEMIC INDEX OF FOODS |
|
Can we say Chinese food? (That's a joke!) The following foods are digested very quickly into the bloodstream so you'll soon feel hungry unless you combine them with foods that are on the Low Glycemic Index. High Glycemic foods can be useful in those individuals who have problems maintaining appropriate sugar levels in the blood. Many times, diabetics get 'low blood sugar' (laymen's terms) and must ingest foods - or take medication- that will raise those levels back to normal. If they are unable to do that, diabetic coma may ensue. High Glycemic foods can also assist during exercise in managing sugar levels. If blood sugar tends to drop during exercise, and is initially low, the foods below can lift levels back to the normal range swiftly. A few high glycemic foods are: - sugar, honey, raisins, carrots, pineapple, banana, jelly beans, donut, bran flakes, graham crackers, cookies, pizza, pound cake, beets, watermelon, rice cakes, dates, bagels As a note, and this is strictly for informational purposes only, my father is diabetic (blind, has needed digits amputated, suffers from kidney problems, blood pressure ills, high potassium levels) and needs close monitoring. The best high glycemic food that we have found to quickly raise his blood sugar levels back to normal is a Hershey Candy Bar. His sugar level not only stabilizes, but it doesn't spike afterwards, so the candy is very good at stabilizing his sugar levels. This certainly isn't for everyone. One of his friends swears by chromium picolinate to control sugar levels. Again, this is for informational purposes only. Diabetics should never be given anything to eat if they are not aware of their surroundings, as they can choke to death. In addition, there are tablets that are sold over the counter at most drugstores that can almost instantly raise blood sugar. The tables tend to be inexpensive. However, in dad's case, the Hershey's bar works fastest and best. |
