Nutrition Facts and interesting information for ostrich eggs including calories and preparation modes.

It's not that these big boys are especially fatty - it's just that they're so BIG that you certainly don't want to enjoy one egg all at one sitting!

Interesting Facts for Ostrich Eggs

Just one of these jumbos is equivalent to about 2 dozen chicken eggs and weighs about three pounds! That's about the size of a medium-sized melon or head of common green cabbage. That's a lot of yolks and a lot of cholesterol milligrams.

One ostrich egg contains about 2,000 calories and is packed with protein (no kidding).

It would require about 40 minutes in order to hard-boil one of these monstrous eggs.

I can't think about this big-white-wonder without thinking about Jane in the Tarzan movies. Every time guests arrived in the jungle, Jane would haul-out her basket of ostrich eggs and start cooking them and the guests would always be awed. It was quite entertaining to watch.

Ostrich Facts

They weigh 300 - 400 pounds and live up to sixty (60) years. Babies grow about one (1) foot per year. That's one long-lived bird; in fact - it outlives a lot of we-humans.

Adults stand at about eight (8) feet tall with males being a bit taller than the females. The neck accounts for nearly half of the bird's height.

The male ostrich is called a rooster and makes a noise that sounds like a BIG boom. The females are called hens.

The eyes of an ostrich are 2 times larger than its brain. That brain? Well, it weighs about the same as the egg it lays.

Laying season generally beings in the middle of March and ends in the middle of August. During this time, the female will lay one (1) egg every two (2) days.

The ostrich can run up to forty (40) mph, just a tab faster than a Geo!

Caloric Values of the Meat Selections

The meat is red and contains less cholesterol than beef, skinless chicken and skinless turkey. One ground ostrich patty (109 grams) contains 180 calories, 22.04 protein grams, 9.48 total dietary fat, 0 carbohydrate and sugar grams, and 77 mg of cholesterol.

Four ounces of cooked tenderloin contains 105 calories and about 19 protein grams.
