I Ate a
10 Pound Fruitcake - Will I Gain 10 Pounds?
Q. This is going to sound crazy,
but I went berserk over the Thanksgiving holidays and ate an
entire fruitcake (all but one piece). My mom made the cake
and claimed that it weighed close to 10 pounds. Will I gain
10 pounds? And what can I do to control myself with Christmas fastly
approaching? We will again be attending my parent's house
for Christmas dinner. I am scared. Thank you kindly.~ Bea
from Detroit
A. Bea, calm down. This
is the good news: no, you won't gain 10 pounds UNLESS the fruitcake
contained about 35,000 calories. I'd say you are pretty safe.
However, fruitcakes tend to be pretty pricey in calories so
you might pick up a pound or two.
As for your 'control' question,
you may consider asking for Hannibal Lector headgear for Christmas
and wearing it during Christmas dinner. Just kidding!
Seriously, it might help if
you decided what you were going to eat BEFORE dinner. Limit
your desserts, if you do nothing else, as they tend to be excessively
high in calories and fat. Take a break by taking a walk, weather
permitting. You may want to consider taking along some healthy
choices, especially for dessert.
If you aren't able to restrain
your Willpower, then hit the diet trail the day after Christmas.
Holidays tend to be the worst time of year for beginning diets.
The fear you feel is actually a very normal feeling, and one
shared by many.~Sky at Diet Bites
