Getting back to basics in life is something that's becoming more popular each day in this strained, stressful world that we live in. This 'change in course' is due to our desire to make our lives easier, less confused, less stressful, and more productive - because even in a world filled with modern day technology, Big Guns sometimes means Little Shooter. While we're busy working to improve our quality of life, in some areas these 'improvements' are actually shooting us in the foot.

Take the daily diet - the simple daily diet of not-do-long ago.

When the pioneers landed in America their ships weren't packed with commercially-produced cupcakes, cookies and candy. Like the Indians before them the pioneers planted crops, hunted for meat and milked their cows and goats using the milk to make their own butter, cheese, sour cream, cottage cheese and other dairy products. They owned chickens which produced the eggs - chickens that hadn't been injected with a plethora of hormones. The pioneers, the Indians - they embraced a simple way of life and a diet which contained simple, natural foods closest to Mother Nature. Their reward was good health, a heart that beat freely - compliments of unclogged arteries.

Oddly enough when we think of Pioneer Days we equate them to a time that was very long ago in our nation's history when in actuality it was only a few lifetimes ago. We've come a long way, baby - and we've gotten here on a road mined with unhealthy foods that are responsible for the modern day obesity epidemic.

Getting back to Diet Basics can enhance any diet program, diet plan or diet journey that you are currently pursuing. Keeping your diet simple and natural will help you to see the big picture of dieting. Whether it's opting for a healthy apple over a large slice of apple pie, or air-popped popcorn over triple-buttered popcorn, or using low fat dairy products over full-blown at the dining table and in recipes, or trimming visible fat and skin from meat proteins - getting back to simple, basic techniques and foods that are as close to Mother Nature as possible help protect our good health while keeping off unwanted pounds.

With all the Diet Preaching, Diet Teaching and Diet Leaching about, the following five lines contain the simple basics of any healthy diet build around the Food Pyramid:

Breakfast - the dawn of a new day which requires 'breaking the fast', thus starting the Metabolism Burn.

Lunch - taking a lunch break will refuel the body's energy.

Mid-Afternoon Snack - to keep your blood sugar levels stable and your appetite satisfied.

Early & Light Dinner - eating light later in the day can assist in feeling better and in losing weight.

Bedtime Snack - a very light snack which can assist in getting adequate rest for the night.

About Breakfast: Individuals who eat breakfast tend to weigh less than those who forego breakfast. By eating a healthy breakfast you'll be less likely to overeat at lunch time. And you'll be starting that oh-so-important Metabolism Burn, kick-starting the daily burn of calories.

About Lunch: A healthy lunch provides the energy necessary to get you through the afternoon hours. If you eat light and make healthy, smart choices for your meal you'll sail through the afternoon on Wings of Energy. If you eat too heavily you'll probably experience mid-afternoon drowsiness and an uncomfortable feeling of fullness.

About Mid-Afternoon Snack: Because you ate light for lunch a smart healthy snack can help carry you through the afternoon until dinner arrives. A great snack choice is beef jerky or a selection of fresh fruit. Low calorie, reduced fat cottage cheese also makes a great choice.

About Dinner: Opting to eat early in the day until long after the sun sets can give you a leg-up on weight loss. You'll have more time to burn the calories. In addition at some point late in our day the body begins to slow down, naturally. Eating light can recharge our bodies without making the body feel burdened and sluggish. Once we feel sluggish we're apt to plop in front of the computer or television....and eat more.

About Bedtime Snack: A 1/2 cup of skim milk or low fat milk blended with a small portion of frozen fruit can assist in relaxing us for the evening while keeping blood sugar levels stable. We'll wake up feeling great, feeling thinner and ready for our delicious, healthy breakfast.
