Dieting, Sizing Things Up

All across the Cotton Belt, the Bible Belt, the Wheat Belt and the Snow Belt humans are busting out of their belts.

Obesity is no longer a national issue, it's now a global issue. So what's a body to do?

Everywhere we look, everywhere we turn - there is some sort of food waiting for us - tempting us to indulge. And it's so difficult to resist, particularly when the scent of a pepperoni pizza is wafting our way.

At least there are a few things out there that can remind us that what we're eating in our current daily diet - and what we're drinking is contributing to weight gain. We need look no further than the size of our clothing, the fit of our belt, the tightness of our shirt and blouse collars, the size of our under-gear and even the size of our ring fingers.

If you're ring is starting to become too tight and you aren't suffering from the effects of arthritis or a related disease, this may be your body telling you that it's time to trim back on the calories in the daily diet.

That tightening belt...it's perhaps the best indicator of weight gain. When we squished around the middle of our bodies, we aren't comfortable. We may become irritable easier - or grouchier.

As we gain weight, our neck is also impacted as it grows wider and thicker. We may have more trouble turning our heads as when driving to view traffic behind us. And when the shirt collar grows smaller, the tie comes off and the first and second buttons on the shirt generally open up to freedom.

Then there are the knees. When excess padding (fat) collects in the knee area it makes it very difficult to bend - to pick up things we drop, to pick up our pets, to see if the casserole in the oven is ready - or to pray. And if the individual has muscle issues or is arthritic - the extra padding can make their condition much more painful.

In women, the bust may become much larger in appearance and what doesn't fit well inside the cups tends to spill over the sides of the bra. And the bra itself may become so tight that a larger size is necessary, and even then the extra weight pulls on the shoulder straps, creating pressure in that area and at times, deep grooves as the body's weight struggles and fights - trying to defy gravity.

We can't forget the face. It's one of the first areas to puff out in both men and women when weight gain occurs. And it can be embarrassing at best. Trust me - this is coming from someone who lost over 100 pounds many years ago and if I could count all the times that I was embarrassed by my overweight state, I'd be a rich woman right now rather than living in a too-tiny humble abode.

With all of this said, if you are concerned about weight gain - pay careful attention to how your clothes, your jewelry and even your shoes fit. If they were fitting loosely and they are suddenly getting tighter, then dust off the bath scales and see if weight gain is responsible.

If it is, then get on a healthy diet plan - lose the weight and get back your thinner body. It's in there. It just needs to be unwrapped.
