Parrot Squawk, a Diet Shake Recipe

Serves 1 for about 130 calories

1 cup of ice cold skim milk
2 fresh pitted dates

Dash of ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon of vanilla extract or imitation vanilla
1/4 cup of crushed ice
1 teaspoon of brown sugar 

Simply place all of the ingredients into a blender and blend until rich and thick. Be sure to use fresh dates as they are soft and have no issue when it comes to the blending process; you'll want the taste of dates scattered throughout this lovely skinny shake recipe - with all the ingredients in a drinkable form.

Pour the skinny shake into a chilled serving glass and enjoy while it is still frothy and cold. Great items to add to the menu include a turkey sandwich prepared with low fat cheese, spicy mustard and fresh lettuce and tomatoes. Sliced potatoes with the skins left on that have been cooked either in the toaster oven or pan-roasted with a tab of olive oil also go very well with this skinny shake.

Dates are a natural food, thus a super food. They are mined with nutritional values. One date contains a skinny 20 calories and is virtually fat free. What a healthy snack!

But don't stop at snacking as they can be added to other wholesome foods or they can create delicious low fat recipes such as our date cake recipe below.

Add fresh chopped dates to whole grain cereal. Or try adding to your next lettuce and tomato salad along with other enhancing ingredients such as sliced cucumber, skinny cheese and chopped walnuts. Serve with a low calorie fruit-based salad dressing along with a serving of croutons.

Date Cake, a recipe for dieters that is lower in calories than traditional date bread

This is a very rich cake which does not require frosting. Enjoy as a light snack with coffee or tea - or as a dessert after meal time. Top with fat reduced whipped topping or whipped cream in a can. As a note, the following recipe can be doubled for a larger cake.

Recipe Ingredient List:

1/4 cup of vegetable oil
2 whole eggs, slightly beaten
2 cup of all-purpose flour plus 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
1/2 cup of Splenda which measures like sugar
1 teaspoon of vanilla
1 cup of fresh, soft dates pitted and finely chopped

Mix all of the above ingredients using a blender until they are fully incorporated and the batter reaches a smooth consistency. Pour batter into a loaf pan that has been treated to prevent sticking. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about half an hour or until cake is fully done in the center.
