As to sweetened condensed milk - how many calories does it contain? They are quite substantial at almost 1,000 per cup in the sweetened variety.

The variety recommended in our skinny shake recipe will save a few extra calories as the sugar content has been reduced in the product. Even so, use wisely and minimally.

The great news is that is doesn't take much in the recipe.

Weight Loss Tips, Low Calorie Recipe Suggestions for Pecans

One of the few fond memories that I have as a child is going pecan hunting with my dad. We would go alone because my mom and brother didn't appreciate nature in the same way as my father and myself. And perhaps they didn't like all the bending of the knees that was required as we didn't have a fancy pecan machine that rolls along the ground and gathers the nuts.

After we'd find a tree in the countryside, we'd return home and crack the nuts - and enjoy them straight from the shell.

They tasted just like heaven.

And of course, we never over-picked an area because the little critters needed those nuts to survive the winter months ahead. We'd always try to find groves of the trees and ask for permission to hunt the nuts. Yes indeed, a rather fond and precious memory.

Pecans contain about 25 calories per nut. While that doesn't seem substantial, the calories can add up quickly. It just takes four nuts and we're already at 100 calories.

Like the condensed milk, it only takes a little bit of pecan to go a long way in a recipe. And the pecan is of course, a natural food - one of Mother Nature's finest gifts.

Here are some tips for pecans for your weight loss plan:

- Add a few chopped nuts to your dessert recipes. A plain yellow cake mix can be taken to an entire new level when 1/4 cup of chopped pecans are added along with a good splash of rum extract.

Substitute 1/2 of the recommended oil with low fat plain yogurt. Don't even think about adding frosting - as it's very moist on its own.

- Add one chopped pecan to your side salad along with a spoon of dried cranberries and low fat fruit-based salad dressing and you'll go from bland to bling!

- If you're fighting a chocolate craving, dip a few pecan halves in dark melted chocolate. Apply a thin coating about half-way up the nut.

The dark chocolate has some heart-healthy benefits, as does the healthy pecan. Just don't overdo - everything in moderation, that's the key to finding weight loss success.
