Grapefruit & Medications - A Bad Mixer

Empowered to Face the Weight Loss Battle of the Bulge

Grapefruit & Medications

Do you currently take a prescribed medication?  Do you often enjoy grapefruit juice? Coffee with grapefruit juice?

Then you may find this article beneficial to your good health....

Studies indicate that grapefruit juice and medications don't mix.

The bottom line in layman's terms:  An enzyme in the intestinal wall called P-450 breaks down some meds. The break down prevents the P-450 enzyme from carrying out its job. The result: a more powerful drug!

The Sidelines on Side Effects

A few individuals on calcium channel blockers for high blood pressure experienced dizziness and weakness when consuming grapefruit juice with their meds. This was a clear indication that they had experienced a drop in blood pressure - an excessive drop at that.

In fact, 'statins' (cholesterol medication) become 15% more potent when combined with grapefruit juice.

Antihistamines and grapefruit juice are also a volatile combination. When taken together, the results can be serious as the individual may develop a heart rhythm disturbance.

Grapefruit juice also effects 'legalized drugs' such as caffeine by raising caffeine intake in the blood. In other words, when taken with your coffee at breakfast, you'll get a definite buzz.
