How Many Calories in Bread - The Staff of Life

Bread has become unpopular lately due to the popularity of low carb diets. Word is out among the Diet Streets that if something is white, then don't eat it.  White bread, white rice, white pasta - foods that are all high in carbs and foods that spell 'Whoops' to a carb restricted diet.

But don't count bread out of your diet just yet, even if you are carb-dieting it. White might be out, but wheat is definitely thin - I mean IN - wheat is definitely in. Wheat bread contains virtually the same number of calories per ounce as the white counterpart, but the grains are more beneficial to the body that breads based on white flour.

Calories in Bread based on a one-ounce serving unless noted.  Please note that calories in different brands of bread will vary slightly due to the recipes used by the manufacturer OR the recipe created at home.

Calories in Water Bagel OR Egg Bagel - One, 2 ounce bagel contains about 160 calories and 31 carb grams.

Biscuit Calories - 1 small biscuit about 110 calories and 13 fat grams.  One of the giant buttery grand-style biscuits may contain 250 to 350 calories per biscuit.

Boston Brown Bread - 80 calories per 1.5 ounces and 21 carb grams

Buns - 100 calories per bun and 19 carb grams

Calories in Cornbread - 95 calories per 1.5 ounce and 13 carb grams.  Corn muffins contain about 115 calories per 1.5 ounce and 17 carb grams.

Cracked Wheat Bread - 60 calories, 12 carb grams

Calories in Croissant - 117 calories, 13 carb grams

Calories in English Muffin - One, 2 ounce muffin about 150 calories, 30 carb grams

Foccacia Bread (Plain) - 75 calories per one ounce.  Calories in Foccacia Cheese Bread - about 120 calories per one ounce serving.  Traditional Foccacia Bread - about 125 calories per one ounce serving.

French Bread - 1.25 ounces about 100 calories, 19 carb grams

Garlic Bread - 1.25 ounces about 100 calories, 19 carb grams.  Calories in Garlic Cheese Bread - 1.25 ounces about 150 calories and 19.5 carb grams.

Homestyle Buttermilk Bread - 80 calories, 18 carb grams

Italian Bread - 83 calories and 17 carb grams

Muffins - Plain,  Blueberry, Strawberry, Banana without nuts - 1.5 ounces (a small muffin) contains about 115 calories and 17 carb grams.  Bran muffins contain about 105 calories and 17 carb grams. If you add nuts, add about 30 calories per serving.

Multi-grain Wheat Bread - 70 calories, 14 carb grams.

New York Jewish Style Rye Bread by Cobblestone Mill - 80 calories per 1.1 ounce slice; 15 carb grams.  This is one of our favorite bread recipes!

Oat Bran Bread - about 70 calories and 24 carb grams.

Pita Pocket Bread - Most regularly sized pockets (1.25 ounces) contain about 110 calories and are a dieter's dream.  Fill with light salads, lean meats and even scrambled eggs.

Popover Bread - 80 calories and 10 carb grams

Pumpernickel Bread - 80 calories and 17 carb grams

Raisin Bread OR Cinnamon Raisin Bread - 65 calories and 13 carb grams

Hot Rolls - 100 calories per roll and 19 carb grams

Rusks (Zwieback) - 160 calories and 30 carb grams

Rye Bread American Style - 60 calories, 13 carb grams

Sourdough Bread - 70 calories and 12 carb grams

Spoonbread (Bread Pudding) - 1 cup contains about 475 calories and 42 carb grams.  Please note that the calories are dependent upon the recipe so this is a general average of the bread recipes we tested in the Diet Bites kitchen.  Spoonbread is very high in fat.  High fat equals high calories.

White Bread - 70 calories, 12.5 carb grams

Whole Wheat Bread (Regular, Seeded or Low Sodium) - 65 calories, 14 carb grams

Vienna Bread - 1.25 ounces about 100 calories, 19 carb grams

Vienna Bread Stick - 90 calories and 21 carb grams

Weight Watchers 100% Whole Wheat Bread - 50 calories per slice and 20 carb grams.  This is a very delicious, low calorie bread.  Weight Watchers also puts out the following tasty diet-friendly items: white bread, English muffins and bagels.

Calories in Bread Note:  There are many varieties of diet bread, as well as carb friendly breads at your local market these days.  Many contain as little as 35 calories per slice and may be quite tasty.

A trick that we use is to spray the bread on both sides with either no calorie butter spray (cooking OR the refrigerated versions) and then we either pop the bread into the toaster OR in a warm non-stick skillet.  If you use the non-stick skillet, cook the bread slowly and it will form a beautiful, crispy, golden brown crust.  Add a few slices of lean meat, a slice of cheese, lettuce and tomato - and you've got one Heavenly Diet Sandwich!  Enjoy with a cup of your favorite soup and a cup of your favorite fresh fruit for a low calorie meal that's full of nutrition and low in fat.
