Sugarcakes, The Low Calorie Recipe

Written by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites

Our low calorie recipe for sugar cakes can fit into a healthy diet plan while curbing sweet tooth cravings.

Our diet recipe contains a serving from the healthy Fruit Group and can help satisfy sweet cravings while dieting for minimal calories.

The shell in our recipe lives within the healthy Grain Group and the whipped cream resides just next door in the Dairy Group.

It appears that all of our ingredients reside in one room or another under the umbrella of the healthy Food Pyramid, doesn't it?

That's the making of a healthy recipe, ensuring that all or more of the ingredients live in one of the Food Groups. When they remain as close to their natural goodness as possible, the ingredients contain the fewest caloric values possible as well as less fat gram content.

Our dessert shell is also a sponge cake which contains a tiny 110 calories per serving. Sponge cakes as well as angel food cake (a type of sponge cake) make the best choice for cake while trying to lose weight. Pound cake just packs on pounds. We'll provide a nutrition fact comparison below for reference. Let's make our Sugarcake first!

The Recipe Ingredients

You will need the following ingredients to prepare this low calorie, diet recipe for Sugarcakes:

1/2 cup of your favorite fruit - fresh, canned or frozen; we allowed 50 calories for the addition of fruit.

1 serving of real whipped cream in a can - the low fat variety for 15 calories per serving OR you can use low fat whipped topping in the freezer section if you prefer - but take note that they contain the same number of calories per serving and the real thing is much easier on your digestive system.

1 dessert shell - or shortcake such as Dolly Madison's 4 in a pack (110 calories each) or you can use a slice of light angel food cake

1 spoon of granulated white table sugar or you can use light or dark brown sugar if you prefer the flavor. You can also use sugar substitute if you wish for zero calories.

Nutmeg, Cinnamon, Cocoa or Ginger - Optional and all contain zero calories.

How to Prepare

Simply top the cake with the fresh fruit; sprinkle on the sweetener, spray on the topping. Dust with the spice of your choice, if desired. You can even cook the fruit and allow to cool or enjoy it warm.

Some great combinations are: banana & cinnamon, strawberries & cocoa, peaches & nutmeg, pears & ginger and apples & cinnamon. Each Sugarcake contains about 175 calories.

Angel Food vs Butter Pound Cake Comparison

Butter Choice OR Better Choice?

Because pound cake is prepared with butter the caloric values as well as dietary fat grams are going to be higher than those of the angel food cake. In order to get a clear picture of caloric difference we need to view both cakes by equal values, so we'll base our comparison on 100 grams of each cake.

The angel food cake contains 258 calories per 100 grams while the butter pound cake contains 388 calories. The angel food cake doesn't quite have a gram ofdietary fat while the pound cake is mined with 19.90 grams - most of which is derived from the bad source of fat - saturated.

Another ingredient that makes the angel food cake a better choice is the use of egg whites in the batter rather than the entire egg. The yolk is mined with cholesterol while the white of the egg is cholesterol-free. It is also very minimal in caloric values, about 17 calories per large egg.

So the yolk not only contains all of the cholesterol values, but most of the caloric values - about 55 calories per yolk of a large egg. In our cake comparison the angelfood is free of cholesterol. Our pound cake which is prepared with butter contains 221 mg of cholesterol. Oh dear. Yes, please pass the tissue box. Lotion infused, please.

Health Note: Many foods are free of cholesterol like potato chips and other chip-type snacks. However, just because a food is free of cholesterol doesn't mean that it won't clog arteries if eaten over time.

In the case of our saintly angel food cake, it's one of the good nutritional purchases as it's also void of oil. On the other hand, our pound cake is prepared with the King of Fats - butter. While Pound Cake makes a 'butter choice', a serving of angelfood cake makes a 'better choice'.
