Tasty, Healthier Pie Crust Recipes
Most of the calories in pies can be attributed to the crust! It's basically concocted with flour, and shortening or butter. Let's talk about some healthier crusts that you may want to consider adding to your diet. After all, the year would be pretty empty without pies.
No cook! Spray a 9-inch pie plate with no-calorie, non-stick cooking spray. Set aside.
Crush about 15-20 reduced shortbread pecan cookies (Keebler Pecan Sandies are fab). You'll need about 1 ½ cups after they are crushed. To crush, place the cookies in wax paper and roll a rolling pin over them.
The reduced cookies have less fat and calories in them, making this a great choice for a slimmer and healthier pie crust.
Add about ¼ cup of butter spray. This is the non-calorie type spray that you store in your refrigerator. The Parkay and the I Can't Believe It's Not Butter are both exceptionally great sprays.
You can adjust the amount of spray, as well as your cookie crumbs, to accommodate the size pie plate you choose to use.
Put the 'crust' into the pie plate and gently pack it down; chill until set. Add your favorite filling. Or, you can cook your filling in the pie crust.
This one is easy and it's a no-cook pie! Just buy a box of the Little Debbies reduced fat/reduced calorie brownies. Take three brownies and press them into a pie plate that's been sprayed with non-stick, no-calorie cooking spray.
Try filling it with some sugar free, fat-free instant chocolate pudding that you've prepared with skim milk. Top with light topping if desired.
This is very similar to the Brownie Pie and it's also a no-cook pie. This time use the reduced fat, reduced calorie oatmeal pies. I recommend Little Debbie's but you can use any brand you wish.
Press four pies into a pie plate that's been sprayed with non-stick, no-calorie cooking spray.
Fill with sugar free, fat-free instant vanilla pudding that you've prepared with skim milk, and that you've added ½ cup of drained pineapple to. Get out your grass hula skirt and dance to seal the mood with this luscious pie!
Crush enough reduced fat, reduced calorie vanilla wafers to make 1 ½ cups of crumbs. Mix with ¼ cup of the no-calorie butter spray and press into a 9-inch pie plate. Bake at 350 degrees for about ten minutes. Cool, then fill with your favorite filling.
1 cup of flour
dash of salt
2 Tbs of sugar or 3 packets of Equal
3 Tbs of fat free cream cheese softened
4 Tbs ice cold water
Spray a 9-inch pie plate with non-stick, no-fat cooking spray. Preheat oven to 475 degrees then mix all the ingredients until moistened.
Form a ball, roll out on a lightly floured surface but take care not to over-work the dough to avoid a 'tough' crust. Prick bottom of crust and bake for about 10 minutes or until lightly golden brown.
Fill with your favorite pie filling.
Reduced fat graham crackers also make a good base for a healthier pie crust. Also, try adding the no-calorie butter spray to your regular pie crust recipes to reduce fat, calories and to promote a healthier end-product.
