The Portfolio Diet
Using the Power of Soy
to Lower Cholesterol

Written by Sky Taylor, Diet Bites

An independent review of the Portfolio Diet Plan

There's a new diet in town and my, is he handsome! He?? Yes, He. This diet is powerful and strong and although very manly, it's for women too!  How exciting!

This new diet is the brainchild of a Canadian research team (working with the Almond Board of California, Unilever Canada and Lublaw Brands) which discovered that soy holds an important key in lowering cholesterol.

Taking 25 volunteers and placing them on The Portfolio Diet for ONE month lowered the LDL by 35%.  The LDL represents the numbers in cholesterol that increase our risk of heart disease.

The HDL represent the numbers that lower our risk of heart disease. A good way to help remember what these sometimes-confusing letters represent is to think: 'L stands for Loser and H stands for Healthy'. Just a thought.

In the volunteers, the HDL appeared unaffected and remained steady.  In the volunteers that were placed on a standard diet, their LDL number fell by 12% - which is quite impressive in itself and of course, will work to lower their risks.

The Menu Plan

It was reported to be an especially filling diet and this is a sample menu:

Breakfast: oat bran, fruit, soy milk

Lunch: vegetarian chili, oat bran bread, tomato

Dinner: vegetarian curry, soy burger, northern beans, barley, okra, eggplant, cauliflower, onions, red pepper

The volunteers also took Metamucil 3 x per day for soluble fiber from psyllium.

By looking at the sample menu we can identify it as containing foods that have been proven over time to be individually beneficial to the human diet such as soy, plant sterols and almonds.

The Types of Food Consumed in Our Daily Diet Impacts Weight, Well-Being & Quality of Life

In addition, it's very low in fat, very vegan, contains a lot of soluble fiber (oats, barley, legumes, eggplant, okra, Metamucil) and it's actually quite tasty. So tasty and satisfying that the researchers reported many of the volunteers remained on the diet after the research ended.

If you are in need of lowering your cholesterol, this diet might be worth investigating a bit further.

Although some cholesterol-lowering medicines work very well in balancing our numbers, there are risks with most any medication.

And most have not withstood the Test of Time.

The Portfolio Diet appears to be a very safe, very effective diet but of course, you should always meet with your professional health care giver before going on any diet plan just to make certain that it's a healthy plan that fits your dietary needs as well as your lifestyle and current state of health.

A healthy heart, is a strong heart.  And strong hearts can be obtained by eating healthy Diet Bites.
