Scarsdale Diet Basic Guidelines

The rules and eating guidelines of the Scarsdale Diet Plan:

- Drink a minimum of 4 glasses of water or diet beverage per day.

- Any of the following may be used to your heart's content: salt, pepper, vinegar, lemon, herbs, Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce, mustard and ketchup.

Why This is Unhealthy Advice

About Water, Beverages

The official food pyramid recommends a minimum of 8 glasses (cups) of water per day, which also includes water content in the foods and beverages consumed throughout the day.

We're all for hydrating with water - but we have issue with the diet beverage recommendation.

Sugar substitutes tops the list of the most acidic metabolized foods. Shortly following is carbonated water. When combined, it's a powerful elixir for an acid body. The most acidic substitute sweeteners include: aspartame, NutraSweet, Equal and Sweet 'N Low.

Healthier beverages, other than water, include 100% fruit and vegetable juices which had no added sugars. Green teas as well as herbal teas also make excellent choices.

About the Scarsdale Diet Condiment Recommendations

All of the condiments recommended on this plan contain zero to minimal calories and may included in most healthy fat-reduction  plans.

Foods containing high sodium content - such as mustard and catsup, and of course salt, may be restricted in the daily diet for some individuals with heart conditions as directed by their physician.

Scarsdale Diet - Menu for Day 1

Breakfast

Coffee/Tea with sugar substitute + 1/2 grapefruit

Diet Bites Analysis: Breakfast is not only highly acidic, it's apt to trigger mouth sores and ulcers in some individuals. In addition, while grapefruit turns alkaline amid metabolization, when it's the sole 'solid' food the natural acidity content of the fruit eats away at precious tooth enamel. Whenever eating fruits high in Vitamin C, make it a point to wash your mouth after consumption.

This meal is severely deficient in calories - about 35 in total. What a shame because the first meal of the day is intended to break the fast - to energize the body and to jump-start the metabolism.

Lunch

All of the lean beef, chicken or fish that you wish + tomato salad + coffee/tea with sugar substitute

Our Analysis: If you want to lose excess body fat and keep it off permanently, it's going to require more than a temporary reduction plan. It's going to require establishing a healthy eating pattern which contains the amount of energy values necessary to support your recommended body weight. A plan which encourages bingeing on proteins isn't going to accomplish long-term success.

The calories consumed for lunch will vary, depending upon the amount of animal proteins consumed. The tomato salad is exceptionally minimal in energy values as dressings are excluded from the diet.

Dinner

Broiled fish + lettuce & tomato salad + grapefruit/melon + coffee/tea with sugar substitute.

Scarsdale Diet - Day 2 Meal Plates

Breakfast: Coffee/Tea with sugar substitute + 1/2 grapefruit

Our Analysis: This menu is a repeat from the first day and will continue forward. At this stage, expect foul breath, irritability and a gnawing hunger pain in the gut. The dieter may also experience digestive issues such as bloating and gas.

Lunch:  All of the fruit salad you wish + coffee/tea with sugar substitute

Our Analysis: Fruit salad is a healthy choice as long as the fruit is natural OR has been packed in natural fruit juices with no added sugars. However, it should never be the star of the meal. After all, the breakfast menu consisted of grapefruit - and now we have another meal centralized around fruit. It's what we call 'fuzzy nutrition'.

Dinner: Hamburger without bread + all the cooked veggies you wish + coffee/tea with sugar substitute

Our Analysis: The accurate food listing should have been '1 hamburger patty'.

Although the Scarsdale Diet Plan isn't the healthiest among fad diets, it's certainly not the worst.

One of the big problems with this method for dropping pounds is that it doesn't provide a healthy eating pattern. Gorging on one food item certainly isn't good for the old system, either.

Our suggestion is to incorporate some meal suggestions from the diet into your daily diet. Begin breakfast with a hearty meal. That 1/2 grapefruit isn't going to last throughout your morning.

Enjoy a healthy, hearty lunch as well.  For dinner, use one of the meal suggestions from the diet menus of this plan. Eating light late in the day is wise when one is attempting to lose unwanted pounds.
