Cheese: Zinc Values, Check! Fat Values, Check & Tilt!!

While cheese can liven up almost any recipe and is a good source for zinc, it's also notorious when it comes to fatty acid content.

While vitamin and mineral content is a plus, added fat certainly isn't.

Diet Tips for Keeping Cheese Calories Minimal

Reduced Fat or Lower Fat Varieties to Reduce Calories & Lipid Content

1. When shopping at the market, opt for the reduced fat or light varieties. One of the best choices is skim-based mozzarella.

2. If you're preparing nachos, opt for the light shredded Mexican cheeses OR you might save more calories by using jarred cheese sauce. It contains about 40 calories per serving while most skim-based cheese contains 60 kcals.

Monitoring Amounts Added to Foods to Trim Lipids & Calories

3. Rather than using shredded, trying using a slice of reduced calorie cheese OR regular that has been cut into ultra thin slices.

There are varieties available at the market which contain a scant 40 calories per slice - and that's for the regular, full-fat varieties.

Acidity of Cheese

It's highly acidic after being metabolized by the body.

If your diet is filled chiefly with foods from the grain, protein and dairy groups and lacking in servings from the vegetable and fruit groups, it may be more acidic than alkaline.

While a body that is too alkaline isn't desirable, neither is a body which is too acidic. When this condition occurs, it can produce a serious situation for some individuals - morphing into acidosis. Diabetics are one of the high risk groups for acidosis.

To retain a healthy balance, adding more fruit and vegetables to your daily diet is essential. Fruits - particularly those which are rich in Vitamin C content fight acidity best.

One might assume that foods which are highly acidic in nature would cause severe issues for the body - but amid metabolization, foods containing Vitamin C become alkaline to the body.

How many servings do you need from the vegetable and fruit group each day? For fruits, 2-4 servings and vegetables, 3-5 servings.
