Dietary Fat: Why Fat is Necessary for a Healthy Diet

The 'no fat' craze reared its head in the 1990's in full force and continues to be quite popular. The unhealthy results of this 'following' should be our guide.

Fact is, you need a certain amount of fat in your diet for proper digestion, shiny hair, healthy skin, energy, to pad your vital organs – and so forth.

Let's logically examine this low-fat, high calorie example:

Maple syrup is fat-free with about 250 calories per ¼ cup. McDonalds serves some very good hotcakes that have only 9 grams of fat per three hotcakes, totaling 340 calories. Caloric content is based solely on the hotcakes - no syrup, butter, margarine, jam or whipped cream.

Add ½ cup of our maple syrup to the hotcakes and we suddenly skyrocket to 840 calories; and that's with no butter added - just the maple syrup. Yes, we're still holding at 9 grams of fat, but look at the calorie content in comparison to the hotcakes with the syrup and without.

If an individual ate this type meal three times per day, they'd see little or no weight loss with minimal heath or vitamin benefits. Nine little hotcakes were never so deadly, or were they?

If we add syrup, the caloric content skyrockets while fat grams remain steady.

One fluid ounce (2 Tablespoons) of sugar free syrup contains 15 calories, blueberry syrup 110, boysenberry 100, butter pecan 110, Old Fashioned Maple syrup 100, and strawberry syrup 100 calories.

And who doesn't like their pancakes with milk? And with butter or margarine? And what about a shot of whipped cream? Yes, the real deal.

Wise Choices for Choosing the Foods For Your Daily Diet

Making wise choices as to the foods that you want to insert into your diet plan makes all the difference when it comes to weight loss results.

So does this mean that we can't ever enjoy IHOP's delicious stacks of pancakes? Of course not!

Our point is - foods containing fat contribute to body weight and it's easier to gain pounds with the foods because they tend to be high in energy values. Natural raw foods are generally minimal in lipid content. BUT - we can't forget about other elements in foods which spike energy values, like sugar.

Keep in mind that any weight loss plan that is worth its salt will include almost all foods and drinks.

Using our logic, this tells us that while chicken skin and fat aren't wise choices for our plan, hotcakes certainly can fit. They are proud members of the grain food group - and we need six minimal servings per day in order to achieve optimum nutrition.

The three stack of Original Buttermilk makes a good choice if we add fruit rather than syrup. Or, what about one pancake and a scrambled egg? And don't be put-off by ordering from the kid's menu; the servings are prepared the same as the ones on the full menu but the size has been reduced.

IHOP also serves a tasty Chicken Tortilla Soup for a tiny 190 calories as well as a Chicken Noodle Soup for 170. Or try their 'Simple & Fit' Grilled Balsamic-Glazed Chicken; it's quite yummy for 440 calories.

There are items to steer clear of such as their Stuffed French Toast at 950 calories, and 52 gi-normous fat grams.
