Breakfast Foods for Dieters
Let's example all five basic food groups within the Pyramid for our examples:
Grain Group: You'll need six servings to meet the minimal requirement and what better way to find them than in whole grain cereals - both hot and cold, bread, muffins, pancakes, waffles, English muffins and bagels.
Protein Group: Eggs are a superior food source for protein needs, so that's good news to cackle about. Bacon can also be enjoyed in moderation when it's lean and prepared in the microwave. Other proteins for this meal: low fat sausage, lean ham and steak. Many enjoy the last with their eggs.
Dairy Group: Latch onto the cow juice, yogurt, cheese and cottage cheese. Cream cheese can be used for topping bagels but take note that it's a high-fat food. In addition, watch how much you cream the coffee and tea.
Fruit Group: Your body requires a minimum of two servings per day and it's so easy to get these in; you can start with this meal by adding sliced fruit to your cereal bowl.
Or, you can add it to plain low fat yogurt - or mix with a spoon of whipped cream cheese and use this mixture for the top of your English muffin or bagel.
Vegetable Group: This category often gets neglected amid the morning meal dash - but it doesn't have to be that way. While a serving of beets or corn on the cob might not be appealing this early, a sauteed mix of mushrooms, onions and bell peppers along with baby spinach can turn a cheese omelet into gourmet delight.
Diet Recipe: Quick Pancakes
Let's make use of the pre-made frozen varieties which are huge time savers. Some taste better than others and it's not always the name brand ones. Pick your favorite brand and place them into your toaster slots. The toaster works so well because you can add the pancakes in their frozen state; the centers will heat while the exterior crisps to a nice golden stage.
Remove and add one pancake to a small plate. That's the size you'll need for this meal; top with 1/2 cup of fresh sliced strawberries or 1/4 cup of fresh blueberries.
Add another pancake, then top with another 1/2 or 1/4 cup of fruit, accordingly. Spray the top with reduced fat whipped cream Total calories equal about 275 when strawberries are used.
