It's the shopping-est time of the year - and you know what's going to happen. You're going to find yourself at the mall with Bing Crosby holiday music gyrating through your little brain - surrounded by silver bells and blinking lights as   those Killer Candy Apples, those irresistible sprinkled  cookies, and those giant buttery pretzels tempt you to run  amok. And once you do - your weight scales will also run amok.

So - keeping this in mind, it's time to do a bit of Calorie Investigation to help keep your weight on track, right? Right! Let's do such by addressing some of the more   irresistible  goodies most of us encounter when shopping.

Cinnabons - The classic Cinnabon roll contains about 730 calories, 24 grams of fat. If you're counting carbs, that's 114 grams. Slash the fat and calories when opting for the Minibon which contains about 300 calories and 11 grams of fat and 45 grams for carb watchers. Don't even glance at the Pecanbon which contains about 1,100 calories, 56 grams of fat and about 170 carb grams.

- One Almond Pretzel - 400 calories, 8 grams total fat, 72 total carb grams (50 calories less without butter)
 
- One Cinnamon Sugar Pretzel - 450 calories, 9 grams total fat, 83 g total carb (50 calories less without butter)
 
- One Garlic Pretzel - 350 calories, 4.5 grams total fat, 68 total carb grams (30 calories less without butter)
 
- One Glazin' Raisin Pretzel - 510 calories, 4 grams total fat, 107 total carb grams (40 calories less without butter)

Fudge Calories - According to the USDA, one square of fudge without nuts contains about 70 calories and 1.77 grams of total fat. If nuts are added - calories will naturally increase. However, nuts do add a nutritional value to the non-nutritional fudge recipe AND opting for fudge prepared with dark chocolate will too.

Gargantuan Candy Apples - While candy apples begin with a typical large apple containing 116 calories, they can become a Diet Killer Shot-put when dipped in the dips of 1,000 dips - caramel, milk chocolate, marshmallow, dark chocolate, white chocolate - then dipped again....and again....and again.   Those tiny candy apples found at the local market during Halloween and autumn are dipped once in a bath of caramel and contain about 160 calories. Multiply this number by 10 or more for an idea of the calories contained in the  gargantuan candy apple.

As to the pizza parlors, cheeseburger joints and cookie stands - never feel too timid to request a nutritional guide. If one is unavailable, trust your Diet Instincts. Green is generally a very Diet Friendly color - the kind found in salads and many vegetables. Opt for food that does not come pre-assembled to your table so you can put it together yourself - leaving out the more fatty, high calorie items.

And although it's important to watch your diet, particularly during the holidays - do take time to include a holiday treat in your diet every now and then. Soon, Bing's wonderful velvet voice will once again be in our distant past.....
