Learning From Previous Mistakes of My Father

Although there are so many things in my past that I'd simply enjoy tossing from my mind forever, it's like the old saying - I'd end up tossing out the baby with the bath water, so I don't want to do that.

And with many mistakes comes much learning.

With Thanksgiving at our heels, it tends to be a time of reflections and I can't think of the holidays without thinking of my wonderful daddy who we lost almost three years ago.

His death was brought on by diabetes which in turn destroyed his heart and kidneys. So I'd like to dedicate this date in the journal to anyone who is currently struggling with diabetes and its troubling symptoms.

I want you around for as long as possible - and there are things that you can do to increase your life span and quality of life. And you don't have to try that hard to accomplish such.

On that note, here are a few things in which my daddy erred - and if he had rectified such, I'm positive that he'd still be here today and for many more holidays to come.

Closely Monitor Blood Sugar Levels & Adjust Your Diet & Activity Accordingly

If only my dad would have monitored his blood sugar levels better, his heart wouldn't have been damaged due to those times when his levels got so low that he almost went into a coma and/or almost died. My mom found him passed out on the bathroom floor several times during the night when his condition was at its worst.

And if only he had monitored his food and beverage intake better that would have worked positively in controlling blood sugar levels as well as in impacting his weight to a more healthy state.

Exercise Management for Diabetes

One thing that my dad went above board with was exercise and that worked strongly to his advantage.

It's hard to think about him without thinking about gardening - his favorite past time.

So please - if these common mistakes strike a familiar chord, I urge you to chart a healthier course that will take your life in another direction - a healthier direction with smooth sailing.

Although tomorrow is Thanksgiving - please take time before you eat to think about the foods that you need to put inside your body rather than the foods that you want to put inside your body.

Although it's difficult to imagine that a few things add up to something so big and wonderful - such as a longer and healthy life, but indeed they do - step by step, inch by inch.
