Low Calorie Recipe for Lavash Bread for Dieters If you haven't tried Lavash Bread - you are missing a delicious low calorie, low fat and potentially low carb treat. Lavash Bread is a soft thin flatbread which Tom and I like to heat on the stove top in a large pan using just a bit of butter flavored cooking spray. Next, we fill one side of the flatbread with skim mozzarella cheese (50 calories) then add a few slices of deli meat, a few slices of ripened tomato, a bit of raw baby spinach, a few slices of black olives - and then we roll it up as one would an enchilada. Delicious! Due to our location we do not have access to speciality shops so we purchase our Lavash Bread in the deli section at Walmart. At this time, 4 huge Lavash Breads cost about $2.00 and contain 50 calories for 1/2 of a Lavash Bread OR 100 tiny calories for one extra large Lavash Bread. Lavash Bread is an Armenian bread and is commonly called Lahvash Bread or Armenian Cracker Bread. Although Lavash Bread often contains sesame seeds or poppy seeds the variety that we purchase contains flax which has so many healthy benefits. Here are just a few:
Low Calorie, Low Fat Recipe for Lavash Bread for Dieters Using a large bowl incorporate the following: 1/4 cup of whole wheat flour + 1 envelope of active yeast + 1 cup of lukewarm water. Add 1 teaspoon of salt. Next, add 1 cup of white all purpose flour and stir with a large spoon or mixer. As flour absorbs add 1 more cup of flour, then another (total of 3 cups of all purpose flour). After all of the flour has been incorporated, knead for about 10 minutes. Dough will be a bit elastic-like. If dough becomes too stiff add a bit of warm water. If dough becomes too sticky, add a bit of flour. After kneading, coat with olive oil and set into a bowl, cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise for about an hour or until double in size. Punch down dough and divide into 30 small balls. Cover with a damp cloth and allow to rest an additional half hour. Finally, roll out until flatbread is paper thin. Place flatbread on a heated baking pan then place into a 475 degree oven for about 3 to 5 minutes or until lightly brown. Entire recipe contains about 1,500 calories or 50 calories per flatbread, 10 carb grams, 78 mg sodium, 0.5 grams of dietary fiber, zero cholesterol, 1.5 grams of protein, 0.2 grams of total fat. Flaxseeds, oat bran, poppy seeds and toasted sesame seeds can all be added to the recipe to create unique varieties of Lavash Bread.
