Flour Tortilla Tips & Preparing Specialty Tortillas

Shopping Tip: When shopping for flour tortillas I never pick 'n toss into the basket because calories differences can be vast. While one brand may contain 80 calories per flour tortilla, another may contain 280 per flour tortilla. Another thing to pay close attention to is the size of the tortilla. Although some are called 'fajita shells' or 'burrito shells' and so forth, for the most part a flour tortilla is a flour tortilla. Some are just a little thicker or a little bigger around.

And as things tend to be, the majority of the time the flour tortillas which contain the least calories are the ones that cost the most - the 'specialty tortillas. Some specialty tortillas are zippy and offer flavorful combinations such as rosemary and sun-dried tomatoes and so forth. More about these in a moment, but for now let's keep on track with the basic flour tortilla.

When I shop for flour tortillas, I opt for the ones that are lowest in calories AND cost. Let's say that my tortilla contains 130 calories. If I'm preparing the Cheesy Quesadillas and my calorie limit for  the flour tortillas is 300 calories, then I simply use 2 of the tortillas and save the deficit 40 calories for something else. Another option is to trim away a portion of the flour tortilla to reach the calorie limit.

Specialty Flour Tortillas - You can prepare both flour and corn tortillas in the comfort of your kitchen. This is a great culinary activity that you can enjoy with the kids - so grab a few.

Begin by purchasing the basic mix at your local market, generally found in the baking isle which contains flour, sugar, cornmeal and oil - as well as other baking essentials. Prepare the tortillas as directed on the package, then turn them into personalized specialty tortillas by adding your favorite spices and ingredients - such as chili powder, dried rosemary and so forth.

Store as directed on the label. Calorie content can be easily calculated by looking at the label. Simply divide the calories in the total ingredients by the number of tortillas you make.

Fresh tortillas add freshness to your meal - and infusing your daily diet with good foods makes weight loss more enjoyable.
