Is a Low Fat Diet a Guarantee for Weight Loss?

There are a lot of low fat diets circling the Diet Village these days, but do they work? Can trimming fat from the diet equal weight loss success?

Wait....let's retract the word 'trimming' because most of the low fat diets in today's world don't just trim fat - they cut fat, they slash fat - they eradicate fat from the daily diet.

Fat is evil. Right? Fat is just one giant blob of glob. Right? Fat goes through the lips and instantly onto the hips, right?

Oh wise ones at Diet Bites - please render us great understanding - for the answer to all the above questions is NO. Think about this - sensibly. Let's use our marbles, although once the Weight Loss Marketing Gurus get something through someone's head - it's difficult un-sticking it.

1. EVERYTHING that we consume is considered as 'energy' by the body. Energy = calories. Let's say that Dieter Jody has consumed the exact number of calories that her body requires. Let's say that Jody is hungry - very hungry. So, she goes into her humble kitchen and decides to eat a carrot.

Where do the calories from the carrot go? Keep in mind that Jody has consumed all the calories her body requires for the day.

The answer? The overage of calories are stored in the fat cells.

Now let's think about something else. Did the carrot contain fat? Virtually none at all. Even so, as far as fat cells go - they do not have a preference over Food Groups. They deal chiefly with storing energy. They don't look at a piece of fried okra and a lump of carrot and say - "The okra goes in the fat cells and the carrot doesn't."

2. Fat is Evil. No way! Without fat in the diet our skin and nails would lose strength and luster. Without fat in the diet, our vital organs would lose their necessary protective 'armor' and put us at high risk for injury which could lead to 'six feet under'. Fat is not a necessary evil in the daily diet - rather a dietary necessity.

In summary, because fat is high in calories it's easy for those calories to add up quickly and in turn, add up to pounds on the body. Even so, fat is a dietary necessity and any diet that restricts fats to below 30% of total calories per day deserves a discussion with your physician.

Choose the types of fat that you add to your daily diet wisely. Keep saturated fats under a tight lid and allow zero tolerance for trans fats.
