" And the weight loss race begins....."

If you're preparing meals for anyone other than yourself, here is our tip for removing a bit of the pressure associated with 'the pleasing factor'. You know - the old syndrome of " Davy wants his potatoes fixed this way but Jamie wants her potatoes fixed that way" .

Meal Time Tip: Prepare the basic meal BUT allow everyone at the table to personalize their dish. For example, if you're preparing a stir fry don't add a certain sauce to the vegetables. Instead, set several sauces on the table and allow everyone to choose their favorites.

Same technique applies to salt and pepper. While Jane may live to coat her food in cracked pepper, Jim can't stand to dust his delicate taste buds in the stuff.

Salads offer huge space for personalization. For Tom and I, the basic lettuce and tomato mix is tossed into individual bowls. If we want to add a bit of shredded cheese, carrots, black olives, dried fruit, cucumber and so forth - it's entirely up to us. There are generally 2 bottles of salad dressing in our fridge - Tom's favorite and mine.

Oh! And as a note to adding carrots to salads - always make sure that the carrots are shredded. If not, I tend to feel a bit like a horse during Salad Time as those chunks of carrots can prove challenging.

There are a couple of caveats:

1. Make sure that the additives offered for personalization are healthy.

2. Opting to forego salt and butter in a recipe during preparation can save tons of calories and help prevent sodium overload. As suggested above, just make certain that both little and big hands don't dip too deeply in the butter bowl or shake too gingerly.

3. Salt and sugar can be ditched for healthier alternatives such as spices (salt replacement) and milk (over high sugar content beverages) and natural sugar (such as fresh fruit with whipped topping for dessert rather than sugar-loaded bakery items).

Whatever you're preparing in the kitchen, start to think how far you can take the dish before 'saucing it up'. Odds are that you'll discover that almost any dish can be basic with room for personalization at the dinner table - from steak to beans to bread to basic vegetables to fruits to - oh well, you get the picture of health!
