The flu is rampant in our area - as it is in many parts of the country. If you're currently on a restricted daily diet or weight loss plan, please take particular care of yourself as you may be at a higher risk while dieting.

Weight loss is tough ANY TIME, much less whenever we take ill. If you're like me, I crave comfort and reassurance when I take ill - and if you haven't got your daily diet under control it's so easy to fall into embracing those unhealthy favorites along with our teddy bear and hot water bottle.

On that note, we touched base on this issue a few weeks ago - but as the flu season is heating up, this information bears repeating. We hope the following suggestions will reduce the risks of  the nasty old flu knocking at your Diet Door:

Increase your intake of citrus-rich foods such as orange juice and grapefruit.

When mingling with others, keep your hands away from your  eyes and mouth - the primary entrance into the body when it comes to flu and colds.

Getting sufficient rest as well as those vital forty winks can decrease risks.

Tom and I keep a spray bottle filled with alcohol mixed with water. We use about 1 part alcohol and 3 parts water. Because we enjoy hiking, we use it to refresh after a hike as well as to remove certain plant oils from our skin - such as poison ivy. It can also remove pesky germs. And for those germy store carts - check out the germ-fighting sheets at your local market. Run one over the handle of your cart - as well as your hands to remove germs. And once you arrive home, be sure to thoroughly wash fresh   fruits and vegetables.

Although I'm not a fan of over the counter vitamins and feel that vitamins should be obtained naturally from the daily diet, a restricted diet may be putting your nutritional needs in jeopardy. Therefore, taking a multi-vitamin may help reduce risk of illness.
