Weight Loss & The Butter Factor

Oh those little creamy-no-nothings that we like to put on top of our food. Butter on carrots, cheese sauce on broccoli, and salad dressings on salads. Why do we do this? Because they taste good! Great even.

But at some point, our carrots suddenly taste like butter. Our broccoli suddenly tastes like cheese. And our salad tastes like the salad dressing we used. In turn, we're not really tasting our foods as the additives overpower them. And yes, for some that's quite nice as many individuals just don't like the taste of broccoli - or any other vegetable for that matter.

But for those who do, cutting back on the additives allows enjoyment of  those earthy flavors which at times, require zero enhancements. Most vegetables taste dandy in the raw, as do fruits, seeds and nuts.

But of course, the Butter Factor doesn't just apply to vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts. This is also about gravy on meat, gravy on bread, sauces on most all the foods we eat, and yes - even fluffy whipped white goodness on top of fruit and desserts. The calories and fat in most desserts alone is enough to tip our weight scales downward, and those toppings - such as luscious chocolate sauce, make those calories sky-rocket way past the Man in the Moon.

To get back to experiencing the tastes and flavors in foods such as Mother Nature intended, cutting off the Topping-Additive Switch all at once can indeed be painful and may not achieve lasting effects. Here are some tips that may help:

When dealing with butter or margarine, grab a measuring spoon and measure out one serving size as recommended on the package label. Transfer that amount onto your plate before adding it to your food. Examine it closely. Remember the size as best as you can. Now - add it to your potato or other foods as you normally would. If you have two vegetables, begin by adding a serving size to each. If you have three vegetables - split the difference. From here you can choose to reduce the buttery amount as time goes by or work towards Butter Elimination.

The zero-calorie butter sprays work well in adding that touch of flavor but keep in mind that they do contain oil. While one spurt might not add up to anything, a huge wad will add up to wads on the body when daily calorie requirements are exceeded.

Opt for seasonings over sauces and other high-calorie toppings.
