Valentine's Day Tips for Dieters  + Free Diet Menu

Let's get right into our tips and we will follow with a free diet menu that we hope will make your Valentine's Day special. And on that note, Happy Valentine's Day from Diet Bites!

Avoid the crowds as well as blowing your weight loss plan by staying at home and preparing a knock-out meal. You'll be able to better control your appetite as well as you fat intake and your calorie intake.

If you're serving alcohol, limit yourself to one dink as alcohol is steep in calories. If you would like to see how many calories are contained in the drink of your choice, Diet Bites has an index listing the calories in alcohol located here.

Chocolate. One cannot think of Valentine's Day without thinking of chocolate. Enjoying dark chocolate can render a few healthy heart benefits over other varieties of chocolate. We suggest that you enjoy 1 or 2 or at most 3 chocolates, then shut the box and walk away. Enjoy them slowly and make them last.

It's easy to get hypmotized in the moment of the evening and not even realizing that you're eating, much less enjoy what you're eating. Try to concentrate on the flavor of your food - and savor each and every bite. Again - eat slowly.

Add a bit of music to set the mood - and get up and dance. Even if you can't dance, try. This will aid the digestive system as well as burn a few calories - like those 2 or 3 chocolates mentioned above....

Go easy on breakfast and lunch as Valentine's Day dinner tends to hold a few more calories than normal as it is a day of celebration. On that note - here is our free Valentine's Day free diet wise menu which includes a nice dessert as well as wine or your favorite non-alcoholic beverage. Total calories equal 769 - again, much higher than most dieters would consume for dinner, but it is a special day.

As an example for keeping calories on tap this Valentine's Day, for those on a 1,500 calorie diet, we would recommend a serving of packaged brown sugar oatmeal for breakfast, 1 cup of skim milk and 1 orange  (about 315 calories total). For lunch - 2 tostados and 1 plum (about 230 calories total). Click here for low calorie  tostada recipe. The total calories for breakfast, lunch and dinner amount to a little over 1,300 - so there is room to spare for chocolate.

Valentine's Day Free Diet Menu

Appetizer - About 100 calories

Start out with either a cup of 60-calorie soup and 3 crackers of your choice OR a salad mixture consisting of any of the following: lettuce, tomato, cucumber, mushrooms, radishes, raw broccoli, raw cauliflower, onions or carrots which have been lightly coated in a light salad dressing (1 Tablespoon per salad using dressing containing 50 calories or less per serving). We're allowing 100 calories for either the soup or salad + the fixings.

Main Course - About 514 calories

1/2 Oven Roasted Cornish Hens (without skin - 295 calories for whole Cornish hen OR 147 calories for 1/2 Cornish hen)

1/2 cup of wild rice with 1 teaspoon of dried cranberries added (about 100 calories)

1/2 cup of asparagus spears topped with 1 Tablespoon of grated cheese (about 50 calories)

1 small whole wheat bread stick (50 calories)

1 Teaspoon of whipped butter or margarine (about 34 calories)

1 serving  of wine (5 fluid ounces) OR sparkling grape juice (1 cup of skim milk (about 123 calories)

Dessert: About 165 calories

1 sponge cake dessert shell (100 calories)

1/2 cup of fresh strawberries (about 20 calories)

2 Tablespoons of light whipped topping (30 calories)

Assemble the above and sprinkle with powdered sugar (15 calories)
