Bread Tips for Dieters

The old saying, "Bread is the staff of life" was quickly trodden to death with the onslaught of low carb dieting which erupted with a fury a few short years ago. Yes, low carb diets have abounded for years - but the heat didn't get turned up furiously until in our recent Diet History.

And once low carb dieting exploded, so did low carb products as manufacturers scampered about trying to take advantage of the low carb craze.

Slowly, low carb dieting has calmed a bit - although still extremely popular. But oddly enough in our experience, post dieters who achieve permanent weight loss tend to embrace a diet high in carbs. I find that I'm one of those dieters - as a big part of my daily diet consists of whole grains. One doesn't necessarily have to blow up the bread basket in order to achieve temporary weight loss OR permanent weight loss.

On that note, here are a few of my favorite bread tips for dieters and non-dieters alike:

 Rather than butter bread to make toast - spray with butter flavored cooking spray OR use no calorie butter spray. Better yet - brush with a bit of olive oil. Cook until golden brown in your toaster oven, your toaster or on the stove top.

 Next, serve your golden toasted bread with a small saucer of olive oil (1 Tablespoon) which has been mixed with cracked black pepper. Delicious and nutritious!

 There's more to life than plain old bread - so mix it up! Opt for flour tortilla shells, corn tortilla shells, pita bread, French, Italian - and so forth.

 Stuff lean cooked ham or fat-reduced cooked breakfast sausage into the middle of an uncooked biscuit - then pop into the oven and bake as directed. My mom used to call these pigs in the blanket whenever she made them for me and my little brother.

 Although bread can spike your diet with nutrition, it can also add up to big calories as not all breads are created equally. While some may contain 35 calories per slice - others may contain 135 calories (or more) per slice. Check the label.

 As mentioned above - grab whole grain breads over the plain old white stuff and you'll be grabbing onto more nutritional values.
