Diet Mumbo Jumbo Modern Day Era of Weight Loss & Dieting Accomplishing weight loss these days is so different from a few decades ago. Back then, I remember my dad trying to lose weight - and he was always on a diet. At the time, he was unaware that he had diabetes - and the health benefits he would have achieved from losing weight. If so, he may have still been here. I miss him so much. My dad - like many individuals, was more concerned with his appearance than his health. At one time he went on the AYDS diet. Although pronounced the same, in those days AYDS wasn't the dreaded disease that comes to mind in today's world, rather a chocolate square which was intended to suppress the appetite. The added benefit was that it tasted like a square of chocolate candy. There were also butterscotch and caramel flavors in the assortment of choices. However, due to the public's association between the disease AIDS and the reducing plan candy AYDS, the name was changed to DIET AYDS. Even so, the company succumbed to the changing times. In the late 1960's and throughout a good deal of the 1970's, DIET AYDS were hugely popular, even though weight was more about appearance than health at that time - along the same thoughts as my own dad was experiencing. My brother and I hounded our mother until she ended up subsiding - and gave us each a square to eat. When we wanted another one, she gave us 'that look'. When the AYDS diet failed to produce weight loss results, daddy embraced the grapefruit diet. There were a few days when I was actually concerned that he might lose his life if he continued the diet as it was very brutal. Back then, dieters were told that the citrus effect of the grapefruit would literally melt off pounds. Then there was the vinegar diet - the one where the acid of the vinegar was suppose to melt away pounds. Unfortunately, that didn't work to melt those pounds off of dad either. There were countless other diets - and from time to time, my dad did manage to drop those pesky pounds. The thing that he was never able to harness was his appetite. At times, he would do so well in dropping pounds, then within a few days, weeks or months, he would regain each and every pound that he had lost, in addition to new pounds. It was a vicious circle. The odd thing is that I remember my dad always trying a fad diet. Never once did he try to drop weight by cutting his food intake. He had to have a plan, even if it was a muddy plan. These days, we have so many modes of weight loss, a good many of those being healthy modes. Diet plans abound. In fact, you'll find several free diet plans here at Diet Bites. In the old days of dieting, the family doctor was as close as one came to receiving a diet menu - and those tended to be bland and hold too few calories. And they sure weren't free. In today's world of dieting we have so many other weight loss helpers - such as a better understanding of weight gain. We have zero-calorie sugar substitutes, and we have many other diet-friendly products including reduced fat , reduced carb and reduced sodium products. We even have a fine assortment of ready-made diet-wise meals that can be found inside our local market's freezer. And let's not forget the exercise equipment which is eons smarter than those in the olden days of dieting and weight loss. Remember the wiggle machine that was basically a band which strapped around the old bo-donkey-donk? It's amazing that the users didn't get a concussion! And yes my dad even tried one of those. :-) So there you have it - a short history of dieting. We've come a very long way, baby. There is good reason to feel good about the future and the advances that will lead to a healthier body and a healthier weight.
