Measure Up For Weight Loss

That little extra difference can slash weight gain.

When it comes to calories and fat - some foods are higher tippers than others. By taking just a few seconds to measure out your portions, you'll not only save calories but you could drop a few pounds in the process. Here is our short list:

- Peanut butter contains about 200 calories per serving which is equal to about 2 Tablespoons, a wad about the size of a golf ball

- Shredded cheese  contains a plethora of fat and calories. Take a look at the following examples and when the Cheese Monster hits - opt for slice cheese over shredded. You'll immediately know how many calories your cheese contains as shredded takes a bit of guessing unless it is measured before it is added to a dish.

Calories in Shredded Cheese
Cheddar Cheese contains about 455 calories per shredded cup.
Colby Cheese contains about 445 calories per shredded cup.
Brick Cheese contains about 419 calories per shredded cup.
Muenster Cheese contains about 416 calories per shredded cup.
Mozzarella Cheese contains about 341 calories per shredded cup.
Parmesan Cheese contains about 336 calories per shredded cup.
Provolone Reduced Fat  Cheese contains about 310  calories per shredded cup.
Swiss Cheese contains about 410 calories per shredded cup.
Monterey Cheese contains about 421 calories per shredded cup.

- Butter  contains about 102 calories per Tablespoon and 11.52 fat grams. Margarine may save a few calories and ranges from 40 calories to 100 calories per Tablespoon, greatly dependent upon the brand used. Take note however that fewer calories doesn't always equal fewer fat grams. For example, margarine that has 80% fat content and contains  hydrogenated corn and soybean oils contains 100 calories per Tablespoon and 11.30 which is almost line-in-line with creamy rich butter. Another reason to check out those labels.

- Cream cheese  contains about 51 calories per Tablespoon - that's 99 calories per ounce, and again the calorie and fat content is influenced by the brand used. Neufchatel cheese contains about 74 calories per ounce and can save a few calories. Fat free cream cheese - in my opinion, forget it unless it's being used in a recipe that's to be cooked.

- Gravy calories vary according to the recipe used and the type of gravy made (sausage gravy, country gravy, rib eye gravy, chicken gravy, milk gravy, etc.) but a good rule of thumb is that one Tablespoon of gravy contains about 25 calories.

- Soda & Juice  calories can be steep! Yes, even including healthy orange juice. Because calories vary from beverage to beverage, look at the labels and measure out the suggested serving size.

In Summary: Notice that not all are considered unhealthy foods or for that matter, generally associated with weight gain like that healthy glass of juice. But too many calories - even if they come in the form of a carrot or a stick of celery will be stored in the fat cells.

Speaking of 'glass' I hope that you'll read this original article at Diet Bites: Cup or Glass, the Surprising Difference which I feel is one of the most important elements of weight loss. From the USDA to modern-day weight loss gurus, the word 'glass' is very misused where measurements are concerned. The correct word is 'cup'. A glass can be any size - from thimble to swimming pool. And yes heard it first - here at Diet Bites.
