Dieter's Tea May Pose Serious Health Risks, Including Death

Posted exclusively at Diet Bites

A warm cup of dieter's tea might appeal as a soothing tool for weight loss but the FDA warms of serious health risks associated with that cup of tea. Dieter's tea may contain the following: senna, rhubarb root, aloe, buckthorn, carcasa, castor oil and laxatives derived from plants.

The FDA reports the following reactions in affected individuals.

Short Term Use of Dieter's Tea - Generally occurs in new users & in those who consume over the recommended amount.

nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, severe diarrhea which may last for several days

Chronic Symptoms Related to Dieter's Tea - Generally occurs in individuals who have used dieter's tea for an extended time.

chronic diarrhea, constipation, pain, laxative dependency, sluggish bowel, loss of colon function

Severe Symptoms Related to Use of Dieter's Tea Which Has Lead to Death

fainting, dehydration, electrolyte disorders leading to death, low blood potassium, irregular heart beat

One of the theories behind dieter's tea and weight loss is that when the bowel is stimulated and empties, the absorption of calories is reduced significantly. The FDA concluded years ago that because induced diarrhea effects the lower end of the bowel rather than the small intestine where calories are absorbed, dieter's tea is ineffective for weight loss.
