One of the most damaging effects of diabetes occurs when the diabetic incurs a drop in dangerously low blood sugar levels. Any of the following may be experienced:

- death

When the blood sugar level drops too low, irreversible damage is done to the heart so it's very important to become diagnosed before this situation has the opportunity to occur.  This type situation happened to my father over and over again, which contributed greatly to his heart condition that eventually took his life.
