Unexpected Weight GainAre you feeling a little rounder around the edges lately due to unexpected weight gain? It can happen to the best of us, even avid weight-watchers. Take Dieter Lucy for example.
On Sunday, Lucy went to an Italian bistro that gently sloped against a precipice that overlooked the city. Waitress Pam recommended the low calorie linguini with red sauce. "It's a favorite among our dieters," Pam assured before Lucy gave her the Diet Thumb's up. Lucy had been carefully watching her diet, counting all the calories in her daily diet, so she was delighted that there was a diet friendly item on the menu. She had planned on having salad and a couple of bread sticks instead. That evening, she did just that - a low calorie salad and one bread stick for dinner. On Monday, wham, bam, thank you Waitress Pam! Lucy's weight scales indicated a three pound weight gain! How in the Diet Heck did this happen?? Although the restaurant had thoughtfully included a calorie friendly item on the menu, it neglected to ensure that the recipe was also sodium friendly. Diet recipes are often times bland. Fat and sugar are two ingredients that add a lot of oomph to recipes, but they also add a lot of calories. Salt is another item that lends taste to bland foods. But sodium also attracts and collects water in the body, thus contributing to water retention, thus contributing to unexpected weight gain. We are happy to report that Lucy's weight receded, but it took a few days to return to normal. Health Notes: Heart patients are often encouraged to cut back on the salt. Whole lot of salt-shaking going on! Many individuals are simply addicted to the salt shaker. Most adults require about 1/5th of a teaspoon of salt per day, and that amount incorporates salt that has been added to the recipes - not only the salt that is shaken onto the food.
