Health Risks of Weight Gain During Pregnancy

Addressing the Most Common Blockades for Dieters

Weight gain during any time of our lives can trigger a myriad of health issues, but to the expectant mother, weight gain not only impacts her health, but may jeopardize the health - or life of her baby.

Health risks of weight gain during pregnancy include:

A more difficult delivery.

Dangerous and sometimes life-threatening level of high blood pressure.

Weight gain may trigger diabetes during pregnancy.

As a note, my dad died due to complications of diabetes.  Although I do not have diabetes, I do have gestational diabetes which is a type of diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy.  click here if you would like to read my personal experience

Weight gain may present breathing problems when laying down as the pregnancy progresses.  As the baby grows, so does the pressure inside.

Accompany breathing difficulties is frequent heartburn.

Weight gain is often accompanied with its best friend - Mr. Inactivity. Therefore weight gain often signals that the body isn't in the best of shape, thus increasing risk for common ills such as colds, the flu and so forth.

Weight gain may increase recovery time after the baby is born.

With all these risks, it just makes good sense for both the mother and baby to do the following:

- Reach for natural snacks such as fruit rather than sugar-filled objects.

- Get with your doctor regarding activities that meet your personal requirements during pregnancy.

- Get plenty of rest.  Studies indicate that individuals who get adequate rest are generally trimmer than those non-Rip-Van-Winkles.

And it's common sense that if we're sleeping, we're not eating.
