COUNTING CALORIES FOR WEIGHT CONTROL For me, counting calories is the best way, as well as the only way, that I have found to be effective in controlling my weight. I've tried everything from counting fat grams to unhealthy fad diets, and frankly they just didn't work for moi. If you plan on counting calories to maintain or to lose down to your goal weight, you'll need to know how many calories per day that your body uses. Keep in mind that if you get in more activity, your body spends more calories so you'll be able to eat a bit more on those days. I make it a point to know the labels on the products that I eat. It wasn't easy in the beginning, but the more label watching that I did, the easier it got. Now, I can make a pretty accurate guess on how many calories something has in it without using the box.
When cooking at home, I generally add up all my ingredients and divide it by the number of servings the recipe makes. To count calories, one only needs to look at the labels and to purchase a small book that lists calories OR there are several sites online that have the calorie content of foods listed like Diet Bites. As a note, the dieter should never go below 1,200 calories per day while dieting as it could be extremely harmful to their health. It's worse than running a Mercedes without oil. |
