Sodium in Celery

Article by Diet Bites

The amount of sodium contained in raw, natural celery as well as Cream of Celery Soup....

Even Natural, Raw Foods Contain Sodium

One cup of chopped celery in its natural state contains close to 100 milligrams of salt - but the calories are very minimal at 16 kcals.

Many recipes prepared with celery can also be very small in calorie content, but much of the time the sodium content increases substantially. We'll discuss this more below - but here are our dieting tips involving this natural ingredient.

1. Mix chopped celery, apple with the skin and a few English walnuts together to form a fabulous, quick and nutritious salad. Add just enough Mayo [we like Miracle Whip] to coat the raw foods.

2. Here's an old standby - but a healthy, nutritious tip nonetheless. Spread your favorite teaspoon of nut butter into a small stick of celery.

3. And a tip which will assist in allowing your spreads - such as the nut butter or light cream cheese - to stick to the stalk. Wash and remove the strings; use a clean paper towel and thoroughly dry the inside of the stalk. If you miss this step, any filling will tend to slide off the celery rather than adhering.

Processed Natural, Raw Foods & Increased Salt Content

The closer to raw that the celery is - or any other vegetable, the less salt will be contained therein. However, when we start adding other ingredients to raw foods, salt content can spiral - depending upon the types of foods which have been combined with the celery.

A good example is Cream of Celery Soup. While low in caloric content at about 90 calories per 1/2 cup serving, it appears to be a stellar choice for dieters. However, this selection doesn't look so healthy when we dig deeper into the nutrition facts.

That tiny 1/2 cup of soup contains about 650 milligrams of sodium.

The current daily allowance for sodium is recommended at 2400 milligrams. That small serving of soup will satisfy more than one-fourth of the recommended daily allowance.
