2200 Calorie Diet: How Many Servings of Grain
For the 2200 Calorie Diet, the daily recommendation equals seven ounces of grain per day. Let's look at a few selections which count as a serving:
1/2 cup of Raisin Bran
1 slice of Russian Rye bread
1/2 cup of cooked brown rice
Yes indeed - even pies can hold a grain base. We have three different preparation methods for our low calorie banana pie recipe, each arriving on the dessert plate with their own unique textures and flavors.
One pie contains six generous servings, or eight regular servings or ten thin wedges.
These are the ingredients for the filling which will be used for the meringue crust and vanilla wafer crust pies. The last recipe makes use of the vanilla wafer cookies as the crust. When the meringue crust or the vanilla wafer preformed crust is used - simply build the pie filling as directed in our meringue crust directions.
You will need the following to prepare the filling:
1 small box of instant sugar free, low fat vanilla or banana cream pudding mix plus the amount of skim milk necessary to prepare.
1 small package of low fat vanilla wafer cookies
2-3 fresh ripe bananas cut into thin or thick slices, as you wish
1 small container of reduced fat whipped topping
3 large eggs, the whites only; reserve the yolks for another recipe.
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of cream of tartar
1 cup of Splenda, a dash of salt
This version is prepared with a meringue crust. To prepare bring the egg whites to room temperature. Add the ingredients together - all excepting the Splenda and beat until soft peaks form. Carefully stir in the sweetener.
Transfer to a pie plate and use the back of a spoon or a rubber spatula to spread the batter around; be sure to coat the sides of the pie plate. As a note, a Pyrex pie plate works exceptionally well for this recipe.
Bake at low heat - about 300 degrees; the oven should be preheated for more even cooking. Bake until the crust is crisp and starts to brown. Remove; the crust will continue cooking as it cools but it does need to be done when removed. The amount of time in the oven will vary depending upon the strength of the heat; generally 20 to 30 minutes is sufficient.
When it completely cool, then layer instant pudding with low fat vanilla wafer cookies and slices of banana. Seal the top with a layer of low fat whipped topping. Dust with a tiny amount of ground nutmeg if desired - or ground cinnamon.
If you purchase a vanilla crust that is a ready-fill type, then simply layer the filling ingredients as directed for the meringue crust recipe. If using vanilla wafer cookies for the crust, line the bottom of a pie plate - as well as the sides. Add a bit of the prepared pudding, then a layer of sliced banana, more cookies - and keep building until you get to the rim of the pie plate. Top with the reduced fat topping.
