1600 Calorie Diet: How Many Servings of Grain
For the 1600 Calorie Diet, the daily recommendation equals 5 ounces of grain. Any of the following will equal a serving size:
One cup of boxed cold cereal - most varieties.
One-half cup of cooked Cream of Wheat.
One slice of whole grain bread.
This is a wonderful way to use up leftover pasta; and on that note, the next time that you prepare some - make a little extra for this recipe.
You can also use fresh from a box that is boiled - or you can prepare your own using the following recipe. We'll post this recipe after our Turkey Mac Salad.
As to the Turkey Mac Salad, it goes together in a flash. It can even be prepared in advanced - such as to be enjoyed for lunch on the following day. Simply store in a sealed container and keep it in the refrigerator until meal time arrives.
2 cups of cooked shell, elbow, bow tie pasta; or use any type that you have on hand except lasagna, ravioli and spaghetti varieties.
1/2 cup of strips of multi-colored bell pepper; we have prep notes involving this ingredient noted below.
1/4 cup of chopped onion (optional) For this recipe, purple, white or yellow onion works well.
1 Tablespoon of sweet pickle relish - you can use the dill-based relish if you like, but we like the flavor of the sweet relish.
1 cup of chopped lean cooked dark or white turkey - or you can use chicken if you wish.
Miracle Whip Light or reduced fat Mayo
As a health note, whole grain pasta will bring more to the nutritional puzzle than plain. Also, if you don't have different colors of the pepper on hand - the color that you do will work just fine without changing the flavor of the salad. Salt and pepper are optional ingredients. Add if you feel they are necessary. And finally, any variety of onion will do - purple, white, yellow - but we do recommend using the sweeter rather than the 'hot' variety.
As to the amount of Miracle Whip, use as much or as little as you like to suit your personal taste preferences. Keep in mind that the more that is added, it also means that more calories and fat grams will also be added. Although light versions of Mayo contain substantially fewer calories - they are still to be added wisely to all foods within the weight loss plan.
To prepare, simply combine all of the ingredients in the list. Serve as a hearty salad with a serving of crusty bread - or enjoy with a serving of whole grain crackers.
You will need a cup of all-purpose flour, 1 beaten egg, and 1/2 teaspoon of salt. You will also need water; add it slowly until you get a smooth dough. Then simply roll out as thin or as thick as you wish, using more flour if necessary to prevent sticking.
Fresh homemade pasta cooks very quickly - in as little as one to two minutes. Take care not to overcook.
To prepare, fill a pot with water and bring to a rolling boil. Drop the rolled out pasta dough into the pot; remove with a slotted spoon when done.
