Calories Burned Mowing Lawn With Hand Mower
Article by Diet Bites
A Hard Day's Night
Late last summer our old lawnmower played out and since that time, we've been hand mowing our yard due to a very pinched budget. On top of the badness - gasoline prices had to shoot through the roof. Pretty soon, I suppose that many of us will be eating deer food.
But when presented with a negative situation, we must look at it and try to find something positive about it, right? That's right!
So what is so positive about mowing a very sandy yard that contains more stickers than grass?
And let me tell you, by the time I'm finished mowing for the day I have enough sand in my teeth to make a glass - and I am covered with enough stickers so that I am even more terrifying than Hellraiser. And when one such as myself is in their senior years (golden...cough....cough) it's not easy pushing a cheapo mower.
So the positive thing about my situation is that while I'm shoving my guts out, I'm getting in a heavy dose of activity. If only we didn't have triple digits in the summer time until almost pitch black in the evening! If you have ever pushed a mower, you know how much more difficult it is to perform the task when it's hot. And oh mama - it's like Justin Wilson used to say - it's hotter than ten yards of Hades here.
I can burn about 120 kcals per thirty minutes of mowing - and it generally takes a lot more time than that because as I've gotten older, I've sorta turned snail-like.
Mowing Burns How Many Calories?
This activity assists in sweating out the impurities of the body, strengthening the heart and lungs (as long as they don't fill up first with sand, grit and exhaust fumes) as well as strengthening the muscles in the legs.
If you are searching for exercises and activities which burn about the same amount of calories as mowing, they will include: planting flowers, digging in the garden, washing the windows, ballet, walking briskly, raking the leaves, playing baseball, dancing moderately, and almost all forms of martial arts.
If I ever get rich, I think I'll take up ballet.....
